David Fullerton Robison
David Fullerton Robison (May 28, 1816 – June 24, 1859) was an Opposition Party member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Early life David F. Robison (nephew of David Fullerton) was born in Antrim Township, Pennsylvania, near Greencastle, Pennsylvania. He attended the public schools, taught school, studied law, was admitted to the Franklin County, Pennsylvania, bar in 1843 and commenced practice in Chambersburg. United States House of Representatives Robison was elected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth Congress. He was not a candidate for renomination and continued to practice law in Chambersburg, where he died in 1859, from a disease contracted at a banquet at the National Hotel in Washington, D.C., during the inauguration of President James Buchanan. Pennsylvania's 17th Congressional District
Pennsylvania's 17th congressional district is represented by Democrat Conor Lamb. The district encompasses the entirety of Beaver County, a small portion of southwestern Butler County, and all parts of Allegheny County not part of the 18th district. The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania ruled that the map violated the state constitution and redrew it in February 2018. The Political Graveyard is a website and database that catalogues information on more than 277,000 American political figures and political families, along with other information. The name comes from the website's inclusion of burial locations of the deceased (when known). It is also a pun; where bodies are buried can refer to the politicians accused of crimes or touched by scandal. History The site was created in 1996 by Lawrence Kestenbaum, then an academic specialist at Michigan State University, and later on staff at the University of Michigan. Kestenbaum was formerly a county commissioner, and in 2004 was elected to be County Clerk/Register of Deeds of Washtenaw County, Michigan. National Hotel Disease
The National Hotel epidemic was a mysterious sickness that began to afflict persons who stayed at the National Hotel in Washington, DC, in early January 1857."The Washington Epidemic", '' New York Daily Times'', March 23, 1857, pg. 2. At the time, the hotel was the largest in the city. By some accounts, as many as 400 people became sick, and nearly three dozen died. Although there was speculation of an attempt to poison hotel guests, that theory was not proven. The outbreak affected mostly patrons of the hotel's dining room but not those who frequented the bar. It began to spread more noticeably by mid-January 1857. New cases of the illness began to decrease in number by the end of January 1857 and continued to abate until mid-February. When the numbers of guests increased for the presidential inauguration of March 4, 1857, the sickness returned again forcefully. James Buchanan
James Buchanan Jr. ( ; April 23, 1791June 1, 1868) was an American lawyer, diplomat and politician who served as the 15th president of the United States from 1857 to 1861. He previously served as secretary of state from 1845 to 1849 and represented Pennsylvania in both houses of the U.S. Congress. He was an advocate for states' rights, particularly regarding slavery, and minimized the role of the federal government preceding the Civil War. Buchanan was the last president born in the 18th century. Buchanan was a prominent lawyer in Pennsylvania and won his first election to the state's House of Representatives as a Federalist.
