Dave Pickerell
David Steven Pickerell (August 14, 1956 – November 1, 2018) was an American distiller. He was considered the "Johnny Appleseed" or "founding father" of craft distilling. Early life and education Pickerell was born on August 14, 1956, in Fairborn, Ohio. His father, Richard Pickerell, was a postmaster. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point from 1974 to 1978, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry. He played on the 1974 Army Cadets football team his freshman year. After graduating, he served 11 years in the United States Army. He received a master's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Louisville while in the army. Career After leaving the army in 1989, Pickerell became a chemical engineer and distilling consultant at Ro-Tech in Louisville, Kentucky. Distillation, or classical distillation, is the process of separating the components or substances from a liquid mixture by using selective boiling and condensation, usually inside an apparatus known as a still. Dry distillation is the heating of solid materials to produce gaseous products (which may condense into liquids or solids); this may involve chemical changes such as destructive distillation or cracking. Distillation may result in essentially complete separation (resulting in nearly pure components), or it may be a partial separation that increases the concentration of selected components; in either case, the process exploits differences in the relative volatility of the mixture's components.
