Dave Opstad
David G. Opstad (born ) is a retired American computer scientist specializing during his career in Digital typography, computer typography and information processing (focusing on character encodings), leading to several breakthroughs. Opstad was a contributor to Unicode 1.0, together with Joe Becker (Unicode), Joe Becker, Lee Collins (Unicode), Lee Collins, Huan-mei Liao, and Nelson Ng. Opstad spent much of his career in Technology company, private industry at Apple Inc., Apple, where he contributed to its TrueType font Specification (technical standard), specifications. His work on TrueType GX, although not much used or supported in its own time, formed the basis for OpenType#OpenType Font Variations, OpenType Font Variations as they can be applied to TrueType outline fonts—all OpenType fonts with quadratic Bézier curves. Hermann Zapf
Hermann Zapf (; 8 November 1918 – 4 June 2015) was a German type designer and calligrapher who lived in Darmstadt, Germany. He was married to the calligrapher and typeface designer Gudrun Zapf-von Hesse. Typefaces he designed include Palatino, Optima, and Zapfino. He is considered one of the greatest type designers of all time. Early life Zapf was born in Nuremberg during turbulent times marked by the German Revolution of 1918–1919 in Munich and Berlin, the end of World War I, the exile of Kaiser Wilhelm, and the establishment of Bavaria as a free state by Kurt Eisner. In addition, the Spanish flu pandemic took hold in Europe in 1918 and 1919. Two of Zapf's siblings died of the disease. Famine later struck Germany, and Zapf's mother was grateful to send him to school in 1925, where he received daily meals in a program organized by Herbert Hoover. Typographic features made possible using digital typographic systems have solved many the demands placed on computer systems to replicate traditional typography and have expanded the possibilities with many new features. Three systems are in common use: OpenType, devised by Microsoft and Adobe, Apple's Apple Advanced Typography (AAT), and SIL's Graphite. Apple Advanced Typography (AAT) is Apple Inc.'s computer technology for advanced font rendering, supporting internationalization and complex features for typographers, a successor to Apple's little-used QuickDraw GX font technology of the mid-1990s. It is a set of extensions to the TrueType outline font standard, with smartfont features similar to the OpenType font format that was developed by Adobe and Microsoft, and to Graphite.
