The Division of Darwin was an Australian Electoral Division in Tasmania. The division was created in 1903 and abolished in 1955, west coast Tasmania locations at the last election held when it was replaced by the Division of Braddon. It was named after Charles Darwin, who visited Australia in 1836. It is not related to the city of Darwin in the Northern Territory. Mount Darwin (Tasmania)
Mount Darwin is a mountain located in the West Coast region of Tasmania, Australia. With an elevation of above sea level, the mountain is situated on the West Coast Range. On the eastern side of the mountain is Darwin, a long-abandoned town site. Mount Darwin is the southernmost mountain of the West Coast range. Mount Jukes is north of the mountain while Mount Sorell is west of it. The mountain is named in honour of Charles Darwin. Mine sites Long abandoned short drives and shallow holes are found on Mount Darwin and are usually cited as being part of the Jukes-Darwin field. West Coast Range
The West Coast Range is a mountain range located in the West Coast region of Tasmania, Australia. The range lies to the west and north of the main parts of the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. The range has had a significant number of mines utilising the geologically rich zone of Mount Read Volcanics. A number of adjacent ranges lie to the east: the Engineer Range, the Raglan Range, the Eldon Range, and the Sticht Range but in most cases these are on a west–east alignment, while the West Coast Range runs in a north–south direction, following the Mount Read volcanic arc. The range has encompassed multiple land uses including the catchment area for Hydro Tasmania dams, mines, transport routes and historical sites. Of the communities that have existed actually in the range itself, Gormanston, is probably the last to remain. The North Mount Lyell Railway was built to operate between the North Mount Lyell mine in West Coast, Tasmania, West Coast Tasmania and Pillinger, Tasmania, Pillinger in the Kelly Basin of Macquarie Harbour. History At the start of the Twentieth century it was constructed to take ore from Gormanston, Tasmania, Gormanston east of the West Coast Range to the Crotty, Tasmania, Crotty smelters. Pillinger, Tasmania
Pillinger is an abandoned port and townsite in Kelly Basin, on the south eastern side of Macquarie Harbour on the West Coast of Tasmania. It was constructed for James Crotty's North Mount Lyell mining company to ship ore from the North Mount Lyell mine, utilising the North Mount Lyell Railway that took the ore to the smelters at Crotty and on to Pillinger. East Pillinger was a company town, and West Pillinger was the neighbouring government town. East Pillinger had 3 wharves, a sawmill, brickworks and ore crusher. West Pillinger had stores, hotels and a police station. ''Kelly's Basin'' Post Office opened on 15 July 1898, was renamed ''Pillinger'' in 1899 and closed in 1924. Pillinger was the name of an old Tasmanian family, some of whom were politicians. Gormanston is a town in Tasmania on the slopes of Mount Owen, above the town of Queenstown in Tasmania's West Coast. Darwin Glass
Darwin glass is a natural glass found south of Queenstown in West Coast, Tasmania. It takes its name from Mount Darwin in the West Coast Range, where it was first reported, and later gave its name to Darwin Crater, a probable impact crater, and the inferred source of the glass. Occurrence Fragments of Darwin glass are found scattered over a 410 km2 (160 miles squared) area. Such an area is called a strewn field. On slopes and flat ground between 250 and 500 m elevation, the glass occurs with quartzite fragments buried under peat and soil. The peat is normally around 20 cm thick, and the quartzite fragment horizon is typically 30 cm thick. On mountain peaks higher than 500 m, the bedrock is directly exposed to the air, and Darwin glass occurs occasionally on the surface. Darwin Crater
Darwin Crater is a suspected meteorite impact crater in Western Tasmania about south of Queenstown, just within the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. The crater is expressed as a rimless circular flat-floored depression, in diameter, within mountainous and heavily forested terrain. It is east of the West Coast Range and the former North Mount Lyell Railway formation. Discovery and description The crater was discovered by the geologist R. J. Ford in 1972, after a search for the source of Darwin glass, an impact glass found over more than of southwestern Tasmania. Geophysical investigations and drilling have shown that the crater is filled with up to of breccia capped by Pleistocene lake sediments. Although definitive proof of an impact origin of the crater is lacking, the impact hypothesis is strongly supported by the relationship of the glass to the crater, as well as the stratigraphy and deformation of the crater-filling material. Gormanston Railway Station
Gormanston railway station ( ga, Stáisiún Baile Mhic Gormáin, links=no) (often mistakenly written ''Gormanstown'') serves Gormanston, County Meath, Ireland. It is located between Balbriggan and Laytown, north of a cast-iron bridge on which the line crosses the River Delvin. History The station opened in May 1845 as part of the Dublin and Drogheda Railway. In 1876 it was taken over by the Great Northern Railway (Ireland). It was the scene of a shooting during the Irish Civil War. On Monday 29 May 1922, Staff Captain James Flanagan (Anti-Treaty IRA) was shot by members of the Royal Irish Constabulary. A Royal Irish Constabulary officer was also killed. Linda, Tasmania
Linda is the site of an old ghost town in the Linda Valley in the West Coast Range of Tasmania, Australia. It has also been known as ''Linda Valley''. North Mount Lyell There had been a location or community high on the ridge between Mount Owen and Mount Lyell above the Linda Valley to the west known as North Mount Lyell and in Blainey's The Peaks of Lyell, the photograph has the caption "The site of North Lyell town, blasted away to form the modern open cut". When North Mount Lyell was taken over by Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company in 1903, Linda was quickly reduced in significance. Eventually most residents moved to either Gormanston, or Queenstown the nearby Mount Lyell towns. Facilities Linda Post Office opened on 18 December 1899 and closed in 1966. Crotty, Tasmania
Crotty is a former gazetted townsite that was located in Western Tasmania, Australia. The township was located on the eastern lower slopes of Mount Jukes, below the West Coast Range, and on the southern bank of the King River. The locality had had a former name of ''King River'' Townsite The town reserve was gazetted on 5 June 1900. The town survey was completed in November 1900. By 1902 there had been development of over 150 dwellings, and 700 people living in the town. The last residents to move away left in 1928. In photographs found in Geoffrey Blainey's The Peaks of Lyell, the foreground shows a bridge, the Baxter River bridge. This was a crucial connection for people travelling between the railway stopping places.
