Danjon (crater)
Danjon is a lunar impact crater on the far side of the Moon. It lies less than a crater diameter to the east-southeast of the larger crater Langemak. To the east-northeast of Danjon is the crater Perepelkin, and due south lies the walled plain Fermi. The northeastern rim of Danjon is overlain by the smaller crater D'Arsonval. Danjon overlies the southeastern corner of the slightly smaller satellite crater Danjon X. The outer rim of this crater is worn and eroded, particularly at the southern end, and the interior floor is irregular and marked by several small craterlets. Apollo 17
Apollo 17 (December 7–19, 1972) was the final mission of NASA's Apollo program, the most recent time humans have set foot on the Moon or traveled beyond low Earth orbit. Commander Gene Cernan and Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt walked on the Moon, while Command Module Pilot Ronald Evans (astronaut), Ronald Evans orbited above. Schmitt was the only professional geologist to land on the Moon; he was selected in place of Joe Engle, as NASA had been under pressure to send a scientist to the Moon. The mission's heavy emphasis on science meant the inclusion of a number of new experiments, including a Fe, Fi, Fo, Fum, and Phooey, biological experiment containing five mice that was carried in the command module. D'Arsonval (crater)
D'Arsonval is a small lunar impact crater on the far side of the Moon. It is situated across the northeastern rim of the older and larger crater Danjon. To the west of D'Arsonval is Perepelkin. The rim of D'Arsonval is somewhat worn and it has a low, elongated central ridge near the midpoint. The rim forms a saddle depression where it is joined with Danjon to the southwest. There is a cleft in the lunar surface beginning just to the east of the outer rim and running northward. The crater was named after French physicist Jacques A. d'Arsonval by the IAU in 1976. ''Jonathan's Space Report'' (JSR) is a newsletter about the Space Age, hosted at Jonathan's Space Page. It is written by Jonathan McDowell, a Center for Astrophysics Harvard & Smithsonian astrophysicist. It is updated as McDowell's schedule permits, but he tries to publish two issues each month. Originally the website was hosted on a Harvard University account, but was moved in late 2003 to a dedicated domain. Started in 1989, the newsletter reports on recent space launches, International Space Station activities and space craft developments. Fermi (crater)
Fermi is a large Lunar craters, lunar impact crater of the category named a walled plain. It was named after Italian-American physicist and Nobel laureate Enrico Fermi. It lies on the Far side (Moon), far side of the Moon and can not be viewed from the Earth. Thus this feature must be viewed from an orbiting spacecraft. The most notable aspect of Fermi is that the large and prominent crater Tsiolkovskiy (crater), Tsiolkovskiy intrudes into its southeastern rim. Unlike Tsiolkovskiy, however, the interior of Fermi is not covered by dark basaltic lava, and so it is barely distinguishable from the surrounding rugged and battered terrain. Perepelkin (lunar Crater)
Perepelkin is a lunar impact crater that is located just to the south of the similar crater Love. Attached to the exterior of its southern rim is the smaller Shirakatsi. Less than one crater diameter to the east-northeast is Lane, and to the west-southwest are the co-joined Danjon and D'Arsonval. The rim of this crater is relatively heavily eroded, and is similar in appearance to Love to the north. Along the western inner wall is an odd, pear-shaped crater that is probably a merge of two impacts. There is a short chain of small craters along the southwestern inner wall. The floor is pitted by tiny impacts, but is relatively level compared to the surrounding terrain. There is a small central peak at the midpoint that has a ridge extension to the southeast. Langemak (crater)
Langemak is a prominent impact crater on the far side of the Moon. It is located less than one crater diameter west-northwest of Danjon, and nearly due east of Meitner. To the southwest of Langemak is Kondratyuk. Langemak partly overlies the larger and older crater Langemak N. This feature is also attached to the northeastern rim of Kondratyuk. To the northeast of Langemak is the crater Necho, an impact feature that lies at the locus of a bright ray system. Ray material from this impact lies across the rim and interior of Langemak, particularly along the northwest and eastern halves. The outer rim of Langemak is relatively fresh and well-defined. The most notable impact along the rim is the small crater Sherrington along the southwestern edge. The remainder of the rim is roughly circular, but irregular with multiple small outward bulges.
