Danforth (electoral District)
Danforth was a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1935 to 1968. It was located in the province of Ontario. This riding was created in 1933 from parts of Toronto—Scarborough riding. It initially consisted of the eastern part of the city of Toronto, bounded on the south by Lake Ontario, on the north and east by the Toronto city limits, on the west by Woodbine Avenue. In 1952, it was redefined to include the part of Scarborough township south of St. Clair Avenue between the western limit of Scarborough and Midland Avenue. Danforth represented what is now the Greektown area of Toronto. The electoral district was abolished in 1966 when it was redistributed between Greenwood, Scarborough West and York East ridings. York East
York East was a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada at different times. It was located in the province of Ontario. History The first federal riding of York East was created by the British North America Act of 1867. Called the East Riding of York, it consisted of the Townships of Markham, Scarborough, the Village of Yorkville and the portion of the Township of York lying east of Yonge Street. In 1882, it was redefined to consist of the townships of East York, Scarborough and Markham, and the villages of Yorkville and Markham. The electoral district was abolished in 1903 when it was redistributed between Toronto North, York Centre and York South ridings. The Library of Parliament (french: Bibliothèque du Parlement) is the main information repository and research resource for the Parliament of Canada. The main branch of the library sits at the rear of the Centre Block on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario. The library survived the Centre Block#Great fire, 1916 fire that destroyed Centre Block. Historical Federal Electoral Districts Of Canada
This is a list of past arrangements of Canada's electoral districts. Each district sends one member to the House of Commons of Canada. In 1999 and 2003, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario was elected using the same districts within that province. 96 of Ontario's 107 provincial electoral districts, roughly those outside Northern Ontario, remain coterminous with their federal counterparts. This is a list of Canada's 338 federal electoral districts (commonly referred to as '' ridings'' in Canadian English) as defined by the ''2013 Representation Order''. Reid Scott
Reid Scott (October 23, 1926 – March 2, 2016) was a lawyer and provincial judge in Canada, and a New Democratic Party of Member of Parliament for the Danforth electoral district, in Toronto, from 1962 to 1968, leaving federal politics when his riding disappeared due to redistribution. He had previously served as the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for the Beaches constituency from 1948 to 1951. He returned to politics in 1969 as a Toronto city alderman. Scott, a law student at the time, defeated 22-year incumbent Thomas Alexander Murphy when he was elected to the Ontario legislature as the MPP for Beaches in the 1948 provincial election. At age 21, he set the record for youngest MPP ever elected which remained unbroken until the election of 19 year old Sam Oosterhoff in a 2016 by-election. Robert Hardy Small
Robert Hardy Small (15 December 1891 – 5 October 1976) was a Progressive Conservative party member of the House of Commons of Canada. Although a lifelong Toronto resident, Small was born in Morrow, Ohio, United States, near Cincinnati, when his parents were temporarily outside of Canada. Small studied at the Ontario College of Art before working for advertising company E. L. Ruddy (since acquired by Claude Neon), becoming the company's production manager by his retirement. Between 1947 and 1951, Small was the Canadian Grand Master of the Orange Lodge, in which he participated for much of his life. In 1928, he gained controversy when he spoke out against federal plans to issue government cheques in both English and French, as proposed in a Liberal party private member's bill. Joseph Henry Harris
Joseph Henry Harris (December 13, 1888 – October 24, 1952) was a Toronto manufacturer and politician. He was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada as the Conservative Member of Parliament for York East in the 1921 federal election. The House of Commons of Canada (french: Chambre des communes du Canada) is the lower house of the Parliament of Canada. Together with the Crown and the Senate of Canada, they comprise the bicameral legislature of Canada. Greektown, Toronto
Greektown, also known as The Danforth, is a commercial-residential neighbourhood and ethnic enclave in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located on Danforth Avenue, between Chester Avenue and Dewhurst Boulevard, in east Toronto. Named after Asa Danforth, Jr., an American contractor who designed Queen Street and Kingston Road, the area is known for its architecture dating back to as early as 1910, and for its number of Greek restaurants and stores. The area was one of the major settlement areas of Greek immigrants to Toronto after World War I.
