Sturgeon River—Parkland
Sturgeon River—Parkland is a federal electoral district in the Edmonton Capital Region of northern Alberta, Canada, and has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 2015. It was created in 2012 from the electoral districts of Edmonton—Spruce Grove (61%), Westlock—St. Paul (33%) and Yellowhead (6%). It was essentially the suburban portion of Edmonton—Spruce Grove. That riding's MP, Rona Ambrose of the Conservative Party of Canada, opted to transfer there, and won easily. She served as interim leader of the Tories, and hence Leader of the Opposition, until her resignation in May 2017. She retired from politics two months later, and Dane Lloyd easily retained it for the Conservatives in the by-election. The riding was originally intended to be named Sturgeon River. Michael J. Cooper (born March 8, 1984) is a Canadian politician who was first elected to represent the riding of St. Albert—Edmonton in the House of Commons of Canada in the 2015 federal election. Cooper was re-elected in both the 2019 and 2021 federal elections and currently serves as the Conservative Shadow Minister for Democratic Reform. Prior to entering politics, Cooper worked as a civil litigator at a law firm in Edmonton. A series of protests and blockades in Canada against COVID-19 vaccine mandates and restrictions, called the Freedom Convoy (french: Convoi de la liberté, links=no) by organizers, began in early 2022. The initial convoy movement was created to protest vaccine mandates for crossing the United States border, but later evolved into a protest about COVID-19 mandates in general. Beginning January 22, hundreds of vehicles formed convoys from several points and traversed Canadian provinces before converging on Ottawa on January 29, 2022, with a rally at Parliament Hill. Erin Michael O'Toole (born January 22, 1973) is a Canadian politician who has been the member of Parliament (MP) for Durham since 2012.
