Danaë (Blanchard)
''Danaë'' is a 1631–1633 oil on canvas painting by French artist Jacques Blanchard, now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon in France. It shows Danaë receiving Jupiter (mythology), Jupiter in the form of a shower of gold, a union that results in the birth of Perseus. Blanchard is also thought to have painted anothe this one part of the William Suida, Suida-Manning Collection acquired in 1998 by the Blanton Art Museum in Austin, Texas. The attribution was made after a restoration of the painting c. 2012 uncovered a previously painted-over putto and an image of Jupiter, which not only identified the mythological subject, but bore stylistic markers of Blanchard's work. In 1992, art historian William R. Crelly had suggested that Virginia Vezzi, Virginia da Vezzo (the wife of Simon Vouet) painted the Blanton ''Danaë''.Crelly, William R. Simon Vouet
Simon Vouet (; 9 January 1590 – 30 June 1649) was a French painter who studied and rose to prominence in Italy before being summoned by Louis XIII to serve as Premier peintre du Roi in France. He and his studio of artists created religious and mythological paintings, portraits, frescoes, tapestries, and massive decorative schemes for the king and for wealthy patrons, including Richelieu. During this time, "Vouet was indisputably the leading artist in Paris,"Posner, Donald. In Greek mythology, Danaë (, ; ; , ) was an Argive princess and mother of the hero Perseus by Zeus. She was credited with founding the city of Ardea in Latium during the Bronze Age. Virginia Vezzi
Virginia Vezzi, sometimes given as Virginia da Vezzo (1600–1638), was an Italian painter, and the wife of French painter Simon Vouet. Life in Italy Virginia Vezzi was born in Velletri on 24 June 1600 to Plinia Ferri, a midwife, and Pompeo Vezzi. She may have had contact with the painter Antonio Vezzi, perhaps a relative of Pompeo. Before 1611, her family moved to Rome, near the church of San Nicola in Arcione, because Virginia showed a talent for painting and her father thought she would be able to study in Rome. Here she began the study of art, probably with Marco Tullio Montagna, an artist from Velletri, and with Cavalier d'Arpino, Gaspare Celio and Lanfranco. From 1622 to 1626, Virginia's family lived in via Ferratina (via Frattina), near to the French painter Simon Vouet. Jacques Blanchard
Jacques Blanchard (1600–1638), also known as Jacques Blanchart, was a French baroque painter who was born in Paris. He was raised and taught by his uncle, the painter (ca. 1560–1630). Jacques’s brother and son, Jean-Baptiste Blanchard (after 1602–1665) and Gabriel Blanchard (1630–1704), respectively were also painters. Despite his polished and prolific output as a religious and decorative painter, very little is known of Blanchard’s early development. He apparently spent his adolescence apprenticed at the Paris studio of his maternal uncle Nicolas Baullery (c. 1550/60–1630). William Suida
William Suida, born Wilhelm Emil Suida (April 26, 1877 – October 29, 1959) was an eminent Austrian art historian and art collector and "one of the greatest connoisseurs of Italian art."Antonio Morassi, "Obituary: William Suida," ''The Burlington Magazine'', Vol. 102, No. 689 (Aug., 1960), p. 371.
