''Dan Rather Reports'' is a weekly news television show hosted by former CBS news anchor Dan Rather and airing on AXS TV from 2006 until 2013. The show premiered on November 14, 2006, when Rather was 75 years old. As host, correspondent, and narrator, Rather had been given full creative and editorial control over the new program. Rather planned to focus the show on field correspondence news, investigative journalism, and politics. The hour-long show is broadcast on Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET (rebroadcast at 11:00). Its longer format allows for more in-depth presentation of issues. ''Dan Rather Reports'': "A National Disgrace" (Episode #617) is a two-hour television report about the Detroit Public Schools (DPS), in Detroit, Michigan, that aired on AXS TV on May 10, 2011. Presented by journalist Dan Rather, this episode was part of his investigative documentary series. It explores a political struggle between the Detroit Board of Education, the governing body of DPS, and Robert Bobb, the emergency manager appointed by the State of Michigan after the city declared bankruptcy. The filming took about 18 months and included interviews with DPS school board members, teachers and administrators, and students and parents. The production filmed a Detroit Board of Education meeting in which the board announced that superintendent Connie Calloway, who held the position for 18 months, was fired. Dan Rather
Daniel Irvin Rather Jr. (; born October 31, 1931) is an American journalist, commentator, and former national evening news anchor. Rather began his career in Texas, becoming a national name after his reporting saved thousands of lives during Hurricane Carla in September 1961. Rather spontaneously created the first radar weather report by overlaying a transparent map over a radar image of Hurricane Carla. In his first national broadcast, he helped initiate the successful evacuation of 350,000 people. He reported on some of the most significant events of the modern age, such as the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Gulf war, 9/11, the second Iraq war, and the war on terror.
