Damara Executive Committee
The Damara Executive Committee was a political party in Namibia, based amongst the Damara people. DEC was founded by a group of people based in the Damara Tribal Executive Committee (DTEC), which was not a political party as such. DEC soon became dormant, but was revived in 1960 by Josephat Gawanab. In 1968 Josephat Gawanab became the president of DEC. In 1971 Gawanab, together with Justus ǁGaroëb from the Damara Council, are appointed leaders of the Dama people by the South African occupation authorities. In 1977 DEC joined the Namibia National Front. Damara People
The Damara, plural Damaran (Khoekhoegowab: ǂNūkhoen, ''Black people'', german: Bergdamara, referring to their extended stay in hilly and mountainous sites, also called at various times the Daman or the Damaqua) are an ethnic group who make up 8.5% of Namibia's population. They speak the Khoekhoe language (like the Nama people) and the majority live in the northwestern regions of Namibia, however they are also found widely across the rest of the country. Genetic studies have found that Damara are closely related to neighbouring Himba and Herero people, consistent with an origin from Bantu speakers who shifted to a different language and culture. Their name in their own language is the ''"Daman"'' (where the ''"-n"'' is just the Khoekhoe plural ending). The Damara Council was a political party in Damaraland, a Bantustan in South West Africa (now Namibia). In 1977 a breakaway faction joined the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance (DTA), while in 1989, the remainder of the DC was one of 8 political parties which formed the United Democratic Front. 6 of the 8 parties were ethnically affiliated, as they had taken part in the governments of various Bantustans.
