Dai Collier
David John Collier MM ( – 30 November 1972) was a Welsh semi-professional football inside right who played in the Football League for Grimsby Town. He finished his career with Barry, playing more than 65 times for the club. He scored on his only cap for Wales, in a 2–1 British Home Championship win over Scotland on 12 February 1921. Personal life Collier served in the Welsh Regiment during the First World War and was awarded the Military Medal for an act of heroism at Mametz Wood during the Battle of the Somme in July 1916. He suffered shrapnel wounds to the leg during the engagement. Llwynypia
Llwynypia ( cy, Llwynypia ) is a village and community (Wales), community (and electoral ward) in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, near Tonypandy in the Rhondda Fawr Valley. Before 1850 a lightly populated rural farming area, Llwynypia experienced a population boom between 1860 and 1920 with the sinking of several coal mines after the discovery of large coal deposits throughout the Rhondda, Rhondda Valleys. The Welsh language, Welsh name means "the Grove (nature), grove of the Magpie" or "Magpie's Bush" and was taken from the name of a farm that once existed in the area. Early history Situated on the River Rhondda Fawr where the river changes direction from south-east to southerly, Llwynypia holds evidence of human habitation from the Bronze Age through to modern times. Mametz Wood
The Mametz Wood Memorial commemorates an engagement of the 38th (Welsh) Division of the British Army during the First Battle of the Somme in France in 1916. The memorial The memorial, erected in 1987 by Welsh sculptor David Petersen, is a Welsh red dragon on top of a three-metre stone plinth, facing the wood and tearing at barbed wire. It was commissioned by the South Wales Branch of the Western Front Association following a public fund-raising appeal. The memorial is located near the site of the engagement in northern France. It can be reached from the village of Mametz on the D64 road. On 12 July 2013, the Welsh Government announced that it was helping to fund refurbishment of the memorial in time for the 100th anniversary of the Battle in 2016. Llanelli ("St Elli's Parish"; ) is a market town and the largest community in Carmarthenshire and the preserved county of Dyfed, Wales. It is located on the Loughor estuary north-west of Swansea and south-east of the county town, Carmarthen. The town had a population of 25,168 in 2011, estimated in 2019 at 26,225. The local authority was Llanelli Borough Council when the county of Dyfed existed, but it has been under Carmarthenshire County Council since 1996.
