Dagwood Bumstead
Dagwood Bumstead is a main fictional character, character in cartoonist Chic Young's long-running comic strip ''Blondie (comic strip), Blondie''. He debuted in the first strip on September 8, 1930. He was originally heir to the Bumstead Locomotive fortune, but was disowned when he married Blondie Birth name, née Boopadoop, a flapper whom his family saw as below his social class, class. He has since worked hard at J. C. Dithers Construction Company as office manager to support his family. The Bumsteads' first baby, Alexander, was originally named Baby Dumpling. The name of his daughter, Cookie, was chosen by readers in a national contest. The family circle is rounded out by Daisy the dog. The origin of both Dagwood's last name and Daisy's name came from Chic Young's long-time friend Arthur Bumstead and his dog, Daisy. Dagwood Sandwich
A Dagwood sandwich is a tall, multilayered sandwich made with a variety of meats, cheeses, and condiments. It is named after Dagwood Bumstead, a central character in the comic strip '' Blondie'', who is frequently illustrated making enormous sandwiches. According to ''Blondie'' scripter Dean Young, his father, Chic Young, began drawing the huge sandwiches in the comic strip during 1936. Ingredients Though the exact contents of Chic Young's illustrated Dagwood sandwich remain obscure, it appears to contain large quantities and varieties of cold cuts, sliced cheese, and vegetables separated by additional slices of bread. ''Blondie'' is the first of two TV series based on the comic strip by Chic Young. The show first aired on January 4, 1957 on NBC and ran for one season. Pamela Britton starred in the title role and Arthur Lake played Blondie's husband Dagwood Bumstead, reprising his role from the '' Blondie'' film series. A pilot episode was filmed in 1954 with Hal Le Roy as Dagwood opposite Britton's Blondie. The series was released in its entirety on September 25, 2018 by ClassicFlix. As of 2021, it airs on Tubi. Penny Singleton (born Mariana Dorothy McNulty, September 15, 1908 – November 12, 2003) was an American actress, singer, dancer and labor leader. During her 60-year career on stage, screen, radio and television, Singleton appeared as the comic-strip heroine Blondie (comic strip), Blondie Bumstead in a Blondie (1938 film), series of 28 motion pictures from 1938 until 1950 and the popular ''Blondie (radio), Blondie'' radio program from 1939 until 1950. Singleton also provided the voice of Jane Jetson in the animated series ''The Jetsons'' from 1962 to 1963.
