Dětský Island
Dětský Island (Czech language, Czech ''Dětský ostrov'' — literally ''Children's Island'') is an island on the Vltava River in Prague, Czech Republic. It lies in the Smíchov district of the city. It is mentioned in texts as early as 1355. Until the 18th century, it was called Maltézský Island (after the owner of the Maltese monastery Panny Marie pod řetězem in the Lesser Quarter). Subsequently, it was named after members of Jews of Prague, Prague's Jewish community who owned the land – such names include Hykyšův, Funkovský, and Židovský. The island was artificially enlarged with the construction of the Smíchov floodgates (1913–1916). The south of the Island was attached to Petržílkovského island and a long dividing wall was built on the north side. The floodgates have two locks and they bypass two weirs on the river. Allan Steven Detsky is a Canadian physician and health policy expert. He is the ex-Physician-in-Chief at Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Professor of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, University of Toronto, and Senior Scientist, Division of Clinical Investigation and Human Physiology, Toronto General Research Institute. Biography Detsky's initial training was in economics, and he graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1978, obtaining his Doctor of Medicine, MD and PhD from the Harvard–MIT Program in Health Sciences and Technology. He was certified as a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1980, with specialization in internal medicine. Research Detsky's initial research interest was health economics, and he slowly became recognized as an expert in the field, after a number of publications in the early 1980s.
