Däfos
''Däfos'' is a live album by percussionists Mickey Hart and Airto Moreira (credited as "Airto") and vocalist Flora Purim. It was recorded at the Japan Center Theatre in San Francisco, California, in 1982 and 1983, and was initially released in 1983 by Reference Recordings. It was later reissued by Rykodisc as part of their series titled "The World", and is included in the Smithsonian Folkways Mickey Hart Collection. The reissue includes a bonus track that was recorded in 1984 at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California. The album is percussion-oriented, and presents a musical ethnography of a fictional country called Däfos. When asked about the meaning of the name, Hart replied: "It isn't really anything. It's a place that Airto and I conjured in our minds." Airto Guimorvan Moreira (born August 5, 1941) is a Brazilian jazz drummer and percussionist. He is married to jazz singer Flora Purim, and their daughter Diana Moreira is also a singer. Coming to prominence in the late 1960s as a member of the Brazilian ensemble Quarteto Novo, he moved to the United States and worked in jazz fusion with Miles Davis and Return to Forever. Biography Airto Moreira was born in Itaiópolis, Brazil, into a family of folk healers, and raised in Curitiba and São Paulo. Mickey Hart
Mickey Hart (born Michael Steven Hartman, September 11, 1943) is an American percussionist. He is best known as one of the two drummers of the rock band Grateful Dead. He was a member of the Grateful Dead from September 1967 until February 1971, and again from October 1974 until their final show in July 1995. He and fellow Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann earned the nickname "the rhythm devils". Flora Purim
Flora Purim (born March 6, 1942) is a Brazilian jazz singer known primarily for her work in the jazz fusion style. She became prominent for her part in Return to Forever with Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke. She has recorded and performed with numerous artists, including Dizzy Gillespie, Gil Evans, Opa, Stan Getz, George Duke, Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, Santana, Jaco Pastorius, and her husband Airto Moreira. In 2002, Purim was the recipient of one of Brazil's highest awards, the 2002 Ordem do Rio Branco for Lifetime Achievement. She has been called "The Queen of Brazilian Jazz". ''The Apocalypse Now Sessions'' is an album by the Rhythm Devils. Subtitled ''The Rhythm Devils Play River Music'', and sometimes referred to by that name, it contains music that was recorded for the soundtrack of the film ''Apocalypse Now''. It was released by Passport Records as a vinyl LP in 1980. It was remastered and released on CD in somewhat expanded form by Rykodisc Records in 1990. The Rhythm Devils is a percussion based music ensemble led by Grateful Dead drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann. Yamantaka (album)
''Yamantaka'' is an album by percussionist Mickey Hart and Tibetan bell specialists Henry Wolff and Nancy Hennings, best known for their 1972 release '' Tibetan Bells''. ''Yamantaka'' was recorded in California in 1982, and was initially released on LP in 1983 by Celestial Harmonies. The album, which features performances on rare and invented percussion instruments, was reissued on CD in 1991 with three additional tracks that were recorded earlier that year in Connecticut, and was included in the five-CD boxed set ''The Complete Tibetan Bells (1972–1991)''. Musicians Jody Diamond, Sandy Sawyer, and Brian Keane, who produced the reissued album, also appear on several tracks. According to the album liner notes, ''Yamantaka'' is named for "the Tibetan god of the dead and lord of the underworld." Berimbau
The berimbau () is a single-string percussion instrument, a musical bow, originally from Africa, that is now commonly used in Brazil. The berimbau would eventually be incorporated into the practice of the Afro-Brazilian martial art ''capoeira'', the berimbau leads the capoeiristas movement in the ''roda''—the faster the berimbau is playing the faster the capoeirista moves in the game. The instrument is known for being the subject matter of a popular song by Brazilian guitarist Baden Powell, with lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes. The instrument is also a part of Candomblé-de-caboclo tradition. Alton Kelly
Alton Kelley (June 17, 1940 – June 1, 2008) was an American artist known for his psychedelic art, in particular his designs for 1960s rock concert posters and album covers. Along with artists Rick Griffin, Stanley Mouse, Victor Moscoso and Wes Wilson, Kelley founded the Berkeley Bonaparte distribution agency in order to produce and sell psychedelic poster art. Along with fellow artist Stanley Mouse, Kelley is credited with creating the wings and beetles on all Journey album covers as well as the skull and roses image for the Grateful Dead.
