Lachen, Sikkim
Lachen is a town in Mangan District in the Indian state of Sikkim. The name ''Lachen'' means "big pass". The Sikkimese government promotes it as a tourist destination. The town forms the base to the Chopta Valley and Gurudongmar Lake. An annual yak race, the ''Thangu'' is held there in summer. Unlike other places in India, Lachen has a unique form of self-governance, ''Dzumsa''. Every household is a member of this traditional administrative system, which is in charge of governing and organizing village activities. Tourism The Lachen monastery and the women's handicraft centre to view the weaving of traditional blankets and carpets reveal the local way of life. Lachung
Lachung is a town and hill station in northeast Sikkim, India. It is located in the North Sikkim district near the border with Tibet. Lachung is at an elevation of about and at the confluence of the Lachen and Lachung Rivers, both tributaries of the River Teesta. The word ''Lachung'' means "small pass". The town is approximately from the capital Gangtok. The Indian Army has a forward base in the town. Before the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1950, Lachung was a trading post between Sikkim and Tibet, after which it was closed down. The town's economy has been boosted by tourism in recent years as the region has been opened up by the Indian government. Tourists come from all over the world to visit the town between October and May, mostly on their way to the Yumthang Valley and the Lachung Monastery. North Sikkim (now officially named as Mangan District) is a list of Indian districts, district of the Indian states and territories of India, state of Sikkim. Its district headquarters is Mangan, India, Mangan. It is the seventh least populous district in the country (out of Districts of India, 640). Geography The district is the largest of the four districts of Sikkim. The landscape is mountainous with dense vegetation all the way up to the alpine altitude before thinning out to desert scrub towards the northern tundra. Numerous waterfalls astride the main road make the trip to this district extremely picturesque. The most prominent effect of the steepness of the valleys is the prevalence of landslides that at times drop to anything between 3000 and carrying devastation along their course.
