Oatlands, Tasmania
Oatlands is an important historical village on the shores of Lake Dulverton in the centre of Tasmania, Australia. Oatlands is located 84 km north of Hobart and 115 km south of Launceston on the Midland Highway. At the 2016 census, Oatlands had a population of 683. Oatlands is considered to have the largest number of colonial sandstone buildings in any town in Australia, and many of them were built by convict labour. The electoral division of Lyons is one of the five electorates in the Tasmanian House of Assembly, it is the largest electorate covering most of central and eastern Tasmania. Lyons is named jointly in honor of Joseph Lyons, Prime Minister of Australia (1932–1939); Premier of Tasmania (1923–1928), and Joseph's wife, Dame Enid Lyons, the first woman elected to the Australian House of Representatives in 1943. Kempton, Tasmania
Kempton is a village in the local government area (LGA) of the Southern Midlands in the Central LGA region of Tasmania. The locality is about south-west of the town of Oatlands. The 2016 census has a population of 386 for the state suburb of Kempton. In a low rainfall region of plains and low hills, it is mostly used for grazing sheep. History Originally the home of the Big River tribe of Aboriginal people, Kempton was first settled by Europeans in 1820. It was originally called Green Water Holes, but by 1820 was known as Green Water Ponds, before being shortened to Green Ponds in 1821. Bagdad, Tasmania
Bagdad is a small town north of Hobart, Tasmania. It is in the Southern Midlands Council. In the days of the horse and buggy, Bagdad was an important rest area and horse-changing place for those continuing their journey up Constitution Hill. It is now an area of orchards and small mixed farms and a commuter settlement. History The town was named by the explorer Hugh Germain, a private in the Royal Marines.
