Dwight Hillis Wilson
Dwight Hillis Wilson Sr. (October 18, 1909 – March 27, 1962) was an American archivist, researcher, and teacher. He was the first archivist of Fisk University. Personal life Wilson was born on October 18, 1909, in Raleigh, North Carolina. His father, a Methodist minister, was also born in South Carolina while his mother came from Pennsylvania. On June 12, 1935, he and his wife, Gheretein Ridgeley, were married in Washington, D.C. They had one son, Dwight Hillis Wilson Jr. Career Wilson earned his degrees from Kittrell College, Shaw University, and Howard College (now University). For his master's thesis, the subject was "Shelley as Revolutionist." He was also awarded with a Doctor of Letters degree from Allen University in 1939. On May 9, 1931, Wilson and 8 others were inducted into the Pearl of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity as Neophytes. Fisk University
Fisk University is a private historically black liberal arts college in Nashville, Tennessee. It was founded in 1866 and its campus is a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1930, Fisk was the first African-American institution to gain accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Accreditations for specialized programs soon followed. It is the oldest institution for higher education in Nashville. History Founding Fisk Free Colored School opened on January 9, 1866, shortly after the end of the Civil War. It was founded by John Ogden, Erastus Milo Cravath, and Edward Parmelee Smith of the American Missionary Association for the education of freedmen in Nashville. The National Urban League, formerly known as the National League on Urban Conditions Among Negroes, is a nonpartisan historic civil rights organization based in New York City that advocates on behalf of economic and social justice for African Americans and against racial discrimination in the United States. Kittrell is a town in Vance County, North Carolina, United States. History Kittrell was chartered in 1885, with its first mayor David Outlaw, a merchant and bachelor. In 1860, one census district in Granville County the primary of the three parent counties (73% of the land area of Vance County was taken from Granville County) of Vance County, was called Kittrell's Depot. Kittrell's Depot was a railroad depot named for George Kittrell and his wife, Elizabeth Boswell Kittrell, who donated the land for a Raleigh and Gaston Railroad station. The first post office for the Kittrell area, with Elisha Overton as its first postmaster, was established in 1854, replacing one in neighboring Stanton in the Epping Forest area which lacked direct railroad access, this establishment occurring shortly after Kittrell's Depot became operational.
