Dwarfstar Games was a division of Heritage Models that published microgame-sized fantasy and science fiction board wargames ''WarGames'' is a 1983 American science fiction techno-thriller film written by Lawrence Lasker and Walter F. Parkes and directed by John Badham. The film, which stars Matthew Broderick, Dabney Coleman, John Wood, and Ally Sheedy, follow ... in the early 1980s. They typically came with 12"x14" fold-out cardstock mapboards and 154 thin die-cut counters. The demise of its parent company also meant the end for Dwarfstar. ''Dragon Rage'' was reissued in a much larger format, with an additional board and scenarios, by Flatlined Games (Belgium) in 2011. Heritage Models
Heritage Models was an American game company that produced role-playing games and game supplements. History Wargame company Battleline Publications merged into Heritage USA to speed its growth. Heritage sold off the Battleline operation to Avalon Hill in October 1979. The company also formed the Dwarfstar Games line in the early 1980s. A microgame is a board game or wargame packaged in a small set. Description Microgames enjoyed popularity during the 1980s and have seen a revival with the popularity of tabletop games in the 21st century. The term generally refers to board games or wargames which were packaged and sold with instructions and maps or playing surfaces printed in a booklet format, or as one large sheet folded until it became "pocket sized" (approximately 4×7 inches). Game pieces (also known as chits or counters) were printed on one or more sheets of thick paper which the player sometimes had to cut for themselves. Other microgames had fully die-cut cardboard sheets like those included with most board wargames. Steve Jackson Games used the Pocket Box to package many of their games in this format. A wargame is a strategy game in which two or more players command opposing armed forces in a realistic simulation of an armed conflict. Wargaming may be played for recreation, to train military officers in the art of strategic thinking, or to study the nature of potential conflicts. Many wargames recreate specific historic battles, and can cover either whole wars, or any campaigns, battles, or lower-level engagements within them. ''Barbarian Prince'' is a solitaire board game published by the Dwarfstar Games line of Heritage Models in 1981. Gameplay ''Barbarian Prince'' is a game in which the player is the barbarian prince Cal Arath, who must regain his birthright from usurpers who killed his father and took over his throne. In order to win the game, the player must accumulate 500 gold pieces in 70 days or less in order to finance the counter-coup that will regain the prince his throne. Each game-turn represents one day, and during that time, the prince can move one hex on foot or two hexes if mounted (or even three hexes if on a river raft or a pegasus). Every time he enters a new hex, the player generates a random event, which may be beneficial or of no consequence, but often involves encounters that can only be resolved with combat. Lewis Pulsipher
Lewis Errol Pulsipher (born January 22, 1951), often credited as Lew Pulsipher, is an American teacher, game designer, and author, whose subject is role playing games, board games, card games, and video games. He was the first person in the North Carolina community college system to teach game design classes, in fall 2004. He has designed half a dozen published boardgames, written more than 150 articles about games, contributed to several books about games, and presented at game conventions and conferences. Early work Pulsipher graduated from Albion College (Albion, MI) in 1973, and earned a Ph.D. in military and diplomatic history from Duke University (1981). ''Ares'' was an American science fiction wargame magazine published by Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI), and then TSR, Inc., between 1980 and 1984. In addition to the articles, each issue contained a wargame, complete with a foldout stiff paper map, a set of cardboard counters, and the rules. Publication history Simulations Publications, Inc.
