Durissy, Haiti
Durissy is a village in the Léogâne Arrondissement, in the Ouest department of Haiti. It is west-southwest of Port-au-Prince. History The village suffered damage during the 2010 Haiti earthquake. The school, just built in 2002, was destroyed. Plans are underway to restore it. Education The village has a parochial elementary school, Our Lady of Perpetual Help.Literally: "Ecole Notre-Dame de Perpetuel Secours" School The school was founded by Father Anis Yves on October 5, 2002. Digicel contributed the school and furnishings. It also supported teachers salaries in 2008. It is a privately funded community school operating with the approval of the Ministry of Education. It is under the guidance of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince. It teaches grades K-7. Food is contributed during the school year. There are 273 students, 105 boys and 93 girls. Ouest ( French) or Lwès (Haitian Creole; both meaning "West") is one of the ten departments of Haiti and located in Centre-Sud of the country linking the Great-North and the Tiburon Peninsula. It is the jurisdictional seat of the national capital, the city of Port-au-Prince. It has an area of and a population of 4,029,705 (2015 Estimate). An ''arrondissement'' (; ht, awondisman) is a level of administrative division in Haiti. , the 10 departments of Haiti were divided into 42 arrondissements. Port-au-Prince ( , ; ht, Pòtoprens ) is the capital and most populous city of Haiti. The city's population was estimated at 987,311 in 2015 with the metropolitan area estimated at a population of 2,618,894. 2010 Haiti Earthquake
A disaster, catastrophic Moment magnitude scale, magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake struck Haiti at 16:53 local time (21:53 UTC) on Tuesday, 12 January 2010. The epicenter was near the town of Léogâne, Ouest (department), Ouest department, approximately west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital. By 24 January, at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had been recorded. An estimated three million people were affected by the quake. Death toll estimates range from 100,000 to about 160,000 to Haitian government figures from 220,000 to 316,000, although these latter figures are a matter of some dispute. Roman Catholic Archdiocese Of Port-au-Prince
The Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince (erected 3 October 1861) is a metropolitan archdiocese, responsible for the suffragan dioceses of Jacmel, Jérémie, Anse-à-Veau and Miragoâne and Les Cayes. The archdiocese was a vacant see following the death of Archbishop Joseph Serge Miot, who was one of the many casualties of the 12 January 2010 earthquake when the Archdiocesan Chancery building collapsed. The archdiocese's chancellor was also reportedly killed.
