Durham University Hockey Club
Durham University Hockey Club is a field hockey club that is based at Durham University. The club's home ground is at the Maiden Castle Sports Centre in Durham. Structure The club runs five men's teams, with the first XI playing (as of the 2021/22 season) in the Men's England Hockey League Premier Division, and five women's teams, with the first XI playing (as of the 2021/22 season) in the Women's England Hockey League Division One North. Coaches , the club is coached by Gareth Weaver-Tyler and Claire Dobison-Lee. Durham graduate and Scottish international Jamie Cachia was previously part of the coaching staff. Gavin Featherstone, a Durham alumnus and former England international who had coached the United States at the 1984 Olympics and South Africa at the 1996 Olympics, led the Durham coaching team from 2003. Maiden Castle Sports Centre
Maiden Castle sports centre, also known as the Graham Sports Centre and the Durham University Sport and Wellbeing Park, is the main sports complex at Durham University and the home for many of the university's teams. It also stages professional football as the home of Durham W.F.C. since 2020 and is used as an international venue, including hosting one of the four 2023 Women's EuroHockey Championship Qualifiers tournaments in summer 2022 and the 1995 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. It has been used as a training ground by Hartlepool United since 2021, having previously been used by Newcastle United. The sports centre is situated on the southeast side of Durham on the floodplain of the River Wear, just south of the Maiden Castle iron age fort from which it takes is name. The men's field hockey tournament at the 1996 Summer Olympics was the 18th edition of the field hockey event for men at the Summer Olympic Games. It was held over a fourteen-day period beginning on 20 July, and culminating with the medal finals on 2 August. Games were played at the Herndon Stadium and the Panther Stadium, both located in Atlanta, United States. The Netherlands won the gold medal for the first time after defeating Spain 3–1 in the final.
