The station is located in the Walker Warehouse building of the former Liggett and Myers tobacco complex. It opened on July 8, 2009. From 1996 to 2009, the ''Carolinian'' and ''Piedmont'' stopped at an "Amshack" modular station across the street from the warehouse. The platform itself dates from 1990, when the ''Carolinian'' began service; passengers used a heated shelter until the "Amshack" was built in 1996. Liggett Group ( ), formerly known as Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company, is the fourth largest tobacco company in the United States. Its headquarters are located in Durham, North Carolina, though its manufacturing facility is 30 miles to the west in Mebane, North Carolina. The ''Carolinian'' is a daily passenger train that runs between Charlotte, North Carolina and New York City. The train began operation in 1990 and is jointly funded and operated by Amtrak and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). The train operates over the Northeast Corridor between New York and Washington, D.C. Intermediate stops in North Carolina include Rocky Mount, Wilson, Selma, Raleigh, Cary, Durham, Burlington, Greensboro, High Point, Salisbury, and Kannapolis. The North Carolina portion of the route runs along the North Carolina Railroad, a state-owned railroad which is leased to Norfolk Southern.
