Durban City F.C. (1959)
Durban City was a South African association football club based in the city of Durban. Formed in 1959 by Norman Elliott, the club was dissolved in 1988. History Durban City FC played in the newly formed whites only National Football League from 1959 to 1977, the team then moved over to the Federation Professional League for the 1978 season. The team moved again to the National Premier Soccer League, which later changed its name to the National Soccer League from 1979 to 1988. The club was sold on 27 July 1988 midway through the season to a group of local businessmen from the KwaZulu-Natal area. The new owners kept the famous blue and white hoops but immediately changed the name to Natal United. The team got relegated at the end of that season and disbanded. In the 1986–1987 season the club courted controversy by becoming the first South African football club to have a mascot. Budgie Byrne
John Joseph Byrne (13 May 1939 – 27 October 1999) was an English professional footballer who played as a striker. He was nicknamed "Budgie" due to his constant chattering. He played non-league football for Epsom Town and Guildford City Youth, before signing a professional contract with Crystal Palace in 1956. He joined West Ham United in 1962, and spent the next five years with the "Hammers". He returned to Crystal Palace in 1967, before joining Fulham the following year. He emigrated to South Africa in 1969 and spent four years with Durban City. He went on to coach in South Africa for many years, and turned out as a player for Hellenic in 1980. He won seven caps for the England under-23 team, before scoring eight goals in eleven full England internationals between 1961 and 1965. William Thomas Williams (born Esher, 23 August 1942) is an English former professional football player and football manager. Williams played for Portsmouth, Queens Park Rangers, West Bromwich Albion, Mansfield Town and Gillingham, making over 250 Football League appearances in total. He also had a spell playing for Maidstone United before becoming player-manager of South African outfit Durban City. After spending around five years at Durban City, Williams went to manage in America spending a year each at Sacramento Gold and the Atlanta Chiefs. After returning to England in 1981 Williams took over at the original Maidstone United, spending three years at the club before agreeing to move back to South Africa to manage Durban United. David James Sexton (6 April 1930 – 25 November 2012) was an English football manager and player. He was notable for managing Chelsea to their first ever major European trophy. Playing career Son of former professional boxer Archie Sexton, he started his professional career with Luton Town in 1951, following spells with non-league clubs Newmarket Town and Chelmsford City. Playing mainly at inside-forward, he would finish his career with time at West Ham United, Leyton Orient, Brighton and Hove Albion, and Crystal Palace. His biggest success came at Brighton, where he won the Third Division (South) Title in 1957–58. Joe Kirkup
Joseph Robert Kirkup (born 17 December 1939) is an English former professional footballer who played as a full-back in the Football League for West Ham United, Chelsea and Southampton. Playing career Kirkup played junior football with West Ham United, and was a member of the FA Youth Cup Final team of 1956–57 alongside John Lyall and John Smith. After signing for the senior team at the age of 17, he made his League debut against Manchester City in December 1958. He was a member of the team that won the 1965 European Cup Winners' Cup. Kirkup made 165 League appearances for West Ham, scoring six goals, before joining Chelsea in March 1966 for £27,000. He made 53 League appearances for the west London club, and joined Southampton in 1967. He made 193 appearances for the Saints, scoring four goals.
