Duquesne Athletic Club
The Duquesne Athletic Club was a professional ice hockey team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that played for only one season in 1908–1909. It won the final championship of the Western Pennsylvania Hockey League (WPHL). History In 1908, the newly organized Duquesne Athletic Club (DAC) entered a hockey team in the WPHL for what turned out to be the league's final season of 1908–09. The club secured future Hall of Famer Alf Smith to captain the team and choose its players. Though unable to retain Smith for more than a small part of the season, the DAC finished with a 10–4–1 record to win the league title. The championship came down to the last game of the season in which Duquesne beat the Pittsburgh Bankers 4–2. Joe Dennison
Joseph Charles Dennison (February 2, 1888 – September 21, 1958) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Dennison played his first professional season of 1908–09 mostly with the Duquesne Athletic Club of the Western Pennsylvania Hockey League. In 1911, he signed with the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey Association. He appeared in 14 games for the Senators during the span of the 1911–12 and 1912–13 seasons. Thomas Westwick
Thomas Frederick Westwick (June 28, 1887 – December 15, 1963) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He played five professional seasons for the Ottawa Senators and the Quebec Bulldogs from 1909 until 1916. His brother Harry was also a professional ice hockey player. Playing career Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Westwick first played senior-level hockey with the Ottawa Hockey Club in 1906–07, although he only started in one game. In 1907–08, he played for the Ottawa Emmetts of the Ottawa City Hockey League. The Western Pennsylvania Hockey League (WPHL) was an originally amateur and later professional ice hockey league founded in 1896 and existing through 1909. Based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the league became the pre-eminent ice hockey league in the United States. It was the first league to openly hire and trade players. Pittsburgh Bankers
The Pittsburgh Bankers were one of the earliest professional ice hockey clubs. The club was based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was a member of the Western Pennsylvania Hockey League, the first league to openly hire hockey players, from 1899–1904 and 1907–1909. The team played all of its games at Duquesne Garden, and was involved in the first known trade of professional hockey players. Alf Smith (ice Hockey)
Alfred Edward Smith (June 3, 1873 in Ottawa, Ontario – August 21, 1953 in Ottawa, Ontario) was a Canadian amateur and professional ice hockey forward who played for the Ottawa Senators ( ''Silver Seven'') and Kenora Thistles. He had six younger brothers who played senior-level hockey in Ottawa: Daniel (b. 1876), Jack (b. 1878), Harry (b. 1883), Tommy (b. 1886), Billy (b. 1889) and George Smith (b. 1891). He was captain of the Ottawa Hockey Club and also coached the team. Hockey career Alf Smith began his hockey career playing for the Ottawa Hockey Club (Ottawa HC) of the AHAC in the 1890s. In 1897 he retired from the Ottawa HC. In 1898, he played for the Ottawa Capitals intermediate team, but did not finish the season because he was ruled to be ineligible.
