Joseph François Dupleix
Joseph Marquis Dupleix (23 January 1697 – 10 November 1763) was Governor-General of French India and rival of Robert Clive. Biography Dupleix was born in Landrecies, on January 23, 1697. His father, François Dupleix, a wealthy ''fermier général'', wished to bring him up as a merchant, and, in order to distract him from his taste for science, sent him on a voyage to India in 1715 on one of the French East India Company's vessels. He made several voyages to the Americas and India, and in 1720 was named a member of the superior council at Bengal. He displayed great business aptitude, and in addition to his official duties made large ventures on his own account, acquiring a fortune. In 1730 he was made superintendent of French affairs in Chandernagore. In 1741, he married Jeanne Albert, widow of one of the councillors of the company. Albert was known to the Hindus as Joanna Begum and proved of great help to her husband in his negotiations with the native princes. His reputat ...

French Corvette Dupleix (1861)
''Dupleix'' was a steam and sail corvette of the built for the French ''Marine Nationale''. She was the first French vessel named after the 18th century governor of Pondichéry and ''Gouverneur Général'' of the French possessions in India Marquess Joseph François Dupleix. After her commissioning, ''Dupleix'' was sent to the Chinese Sea under Vice-Admiral Jaures. She arrived in Saigon on 25 August 1862, and made short stops in Ryukyu Islands and the port of Hakodate on the island of Hokkaidō, before arriving in Yokohama. Bombardment of Shimonoseki During the bombardment of Shimonoseki (5 September 1864), ''Dupleix'' was second in the line of corvettes, between the British and the Dutch ''Metallkruz''. French Cruiser Dupleix (1930)
''Dupleix'' was the fourth unit of the . She entered service in 1933 and spent the interwar period in the Mediterranean. She participated in the International Patrol during the Spanish Civil War. September 1939 found her still in Toulon. She participated in the search for the ''Graf Spee'' in the Atlantic before returning to Toulon. The only time she fired her guns in anger was during the bombardment of Vado, Italy in mid-June 1940. She was at Toulon at the time of the Franco-German Armistice in June 1940. She remained at Toulon until the French Fleet there was scuttled in late November 1942. She was subsequently raised by the Italians in 1943. She was the fourth French vessel (beside also two French commercial ships) named after the 18th century Governor of Pondichéry and Governor-General of the French possessions in India marquess Joseph François Dupleix. She was decommissioned in 2014. Service history ''Dupleix'' was constructed by the Brest Arsenal, France, with her keel being laid down on 17 October 1975. The vessel was launched on 2 December 1978 and was commissioned into the French Navy on 13 June 1981. She was one of the last fighting sailing ships to be used in war when she served as a merchant raider with Imperial Germany in World War I.
