Dundalk Stadium is a horse and greyhound racing venue in Ireland. It is located to the north of Dundalk in County Louth. The total build cost €35million with a modern grandstand, elevated viewing areas, restaurant and bars. Horse racing The Dundalk all-weather horse track to go alongside the new greyhound track that had opened earlier, officially opened on 26 August 2007 costing a further €24million. The course is a floodlit 1¼ mile left-handed oval, and races are run on an all-weather Polytrack surface. A turf racecourse at Dundalk, which was mainly used for National Hunt events, was closed in 2001. The present all-weather track, reserved for flat races, was opened in August 2007. The highest class horse races to be run at the venue are the Diamond Stakes, which was promoted from Listed to Group 3 status in 2009, and the Mercury Stakes which was upgraded to Group 3 status in 2018. Dundalk
Dundalk ( ; ga, Dún Dealgan ), meaning "the fort of Dealgan", is the county town (the administrative centre) of County Louth, Ireland. The town is on the Castletown River, which flows into Dundalk Bay on the east coast of Ireland. It is halfway between Dublin and Belfast, close to the border with Northern Ireland. It is the eighth largest urban area in Ireland, with a population of 39,004 as of the 2016 census. Having been inhabited since the Neolithic period, Dundalk was established as a Norman stronghold in the 12th century following the Norman invasion of Ireland, and became the northernmost outpost of The Pale in the Late Middle Ages. Dundalk Ramparts Greyhound Stadium
Dundalk Greyhound Stadium also known as the Ramparts was a greyhound racing stadium off Rampart Lane on Townparks, Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland. Opening Racing started on 29 October 1930 just eleven days after the Dundalk greyhound racing company was formed. The venue was called the Ramparts and was found east of central Dundalk, south of Rampart Lane. Paddy Martin was the founding director and also acted as Racing Manager at the track. History Paddy Martin's brother Jimmy took over the reins as Racing Manager in 1957 and later the Dundealgan Greyhound Racing Co decided to introduce a major event to the track in an attempt to attract the open race stars. That event was the Dundalk International and the excellent prize money ensured that entries from the United Kingdom were also received. The first running was in 1968 and won by Not Flashing. The Dundalk International is a greyhound racing competition held annually at Dundalk Stadium in Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland. It was held at the Dundalk Ramparts Greyhound Stadium from 1968 until 2000 until the track closed in 2000 and then it returned in 2004 after the new track was built. It is a prestigious event and is invitation only, attracting some of Ireland's leading greyhounds and occasionally some of the Britain's leading greyhounds. John O'Donoghue (born 28 May 1956) is a former Irish Fianna Fáil politician who served as Ceann Comhairle of Dáil Éireann from 2007 to 2009, Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism from 2002 to 2007, Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform from 1997 to 2002 and Minister of State at the Department of Finance from 1991 to 1992. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Kerry South constituency from 1987 to 2011. Early and private life O'Donoghue was born in Cork in 1956, but is a native of Cahersiveen, County Kerry.
