Duncan Cameron (Conservative MLA)
Duncan Cameron (May 1, 1863 – September 23, 1942) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1908 to 1910, as an Independent Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba, Conservative. Cameron was born in Morvern, Morven, Argyllshire, Scotland, and was educated at Oban, Scotland, Oban. He later moved to Canada, and became a farmer. He was one of the first homesteaders at Gilbert Plains, Manitoba, Gilbert Plains in Manitoba, taking up land in 1889. He operated a general store in the community from 1893 to 1899, and become its first Reeve (Canada), reeve upon its official establishment as a municipality. In 1896, he married Christina McTavish. Duncan Cameron (Wiktionary:circa, c 1764 – May 15, 1848) was a Canadians, Canadian fur trader and political figure in Upper Canada. He was born in Glenmoriston, Scotland around 1764. He came to Tryon County, New York with his parents in 1773. His father served with a loyalist regiment during the American Revolution and the family came to Upper Canada after the war. In 1785, he began work as a clerk for a fur trading company in the Lake Nipigon area. In 1795, he joined the North West Company and became a partner in charge of the Nipigon department. In 1807, he was placed in charge of the Lake Winnipeg department with Alexander MacKay (fur trader), Alexander MacKay and, in 1811, took charge of the Lac La Pluie department. Throughout this period, he had been in fierce competition with the Hudson's Bay Company. Duncan Cameron (August 1, 1865—October 8, 1948) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1920 to 1922, as a member of the Liberal Party. Early life and move to Canada Cameron was born in Inverness, Scotland, and was educated in Inverness and Stafford, England. He came to Canada in 1885,, and became manager of the D.E. Adams Coal Co. Ltd., retiring in 1943. Cameron was an active freemason, and served on the Winnipeg Board of Trade. He was elected to the Winnipeg School Board in 1917. In religion, he was a Presbyterian. → Duncan Cameron (12 October 1825 – 19 February 1901) was a Scottish businessman, owner of ''The Oban Times'' newspaper and the inventor of the "''Waverley''" pen-nib. Life Duncan Cameron, along with his brothers John and Donald Cameron, were the owners of the Edinburgh-based printing and stationery firm of Macniven and Cameron. Duncan Cameron joined the firm in 1850, and in 1865 received a patent for the "''Waverley''" nib (pen), nib for the company. The popular "''Waverley''" was unique in design with a narrow waist and an upturned tip. The tip's design made the ink flow more smoothly on the paper. The "''Waverley''" was named after the Waverley novels of Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832), which were still hugely popular at the time. In 1882, Cameron purchased ''The Oban Times'' newspaper for £4,000 following the death of its founder, James Miller. Duncan Cameron is an administrator and ex-player in the sport of shinty. He is a three times past president of the sport's governing body, the Camanachd Association. Playing career Cameron was a player for Ballachulish before moving to Glasgow and playing for several clubs in Glasgow. Involvement in shinty politics Cameron, alongside his brother Iain, was instrumental in bringing about changes in shinty in the 1970s and early 1980s through public forums and reports. After holding various positions in the Glasgow Celtic Society, Cameron was elected President of the Camanachd Association in 1994, a position he held until 2000. In this time he brought about the establishment of a National Premier Division and National Division One and was also re-elected. He was elected in 2007 to succeed John Mackenzie. Duncan Cameron (British Army Officer)
General Sir Duncan Alexander Cameron, (20 May 18088 June 1888) was a British Army officer who fought in the Crimean War and part of the New Zealand Wars. He was later a governor of the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Born into a family with a military tradition, Cameron joined the British Army in 1825. Commissioned into the 42nd Regiment of Foot, he had risen to the rank of lieutenant-colonel by 1854 and was a battalion commander. He served in the Crimean War and fought in the Battle of Alma. Afterwards, he assumed command of the Highland Brigade and led it through the Battle of Balaclava and the Siege of Sevastopol. He finished the war as a temporary major-general and received several honours for his service. Duncan Inglis Cameron OBE (26 August 1927 – 7 May 2006) was a university administrator and Secretary of Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. Early life Born in Glasgow, he attended the academically rigorous Glasgow High School, and then went on to study law at the University of Glasgow. During the years 1945 - 1948, he performed his national service flying with the RAF, after which he began his administrative career as a Chartered Accountant's apprentice with Alfred Tongue & Co. In 1951 he progressed to become a qualified assistant with Cooper Bros & Co. Cameron's first step into working within a university came in 1952, when he was appointed an assistant accountant of the University of Edinburgh remaining there for 13 years.
