Dunagan, Texas
Dunagan is a ghost town in Angelina County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located within the Lufkin, Texas micropolitan area. History Dunagan was named for a man named Isaac Dunagan and was first settled in the early 1840s (before Angelina County was established). The first commissioners' court in the county met at Dunagan's house in 1846. The community, as well as nearby Moses Bluff, were up for a vote on being the county seat after the county was established in 1846. Moses Bluff won the vote 26:2. To appease dissatisfied voters, another election was held, but this time, Moses Bluff had 39 votes, while Dunagan again only had two. For election purposes, Moses Bluff was designated as River Place for its location on the Angelina River, while Dunagan went by the name Center. It became a ghost town afterward, and only a railroad siding was in the area in the 1980s. Angelina River
The Angelina River is formed by the junction of Barnhardt and Shawnee creeks northwest of Laneville in southwest central Rusk County, Texas. The river flows southeast for and forms the boundaries between Cherokee and Nacogdoches, Angelina and Nacogdoches, and Angelina and San Augustine counties. It passes under US 59 via former Angelina River Bridge. It empties into the Neches River north of Jasper in northwestern Jasper County. The Sam Rayburn Reservoir is on the southern part of the river. History The river was named for a native Hasinai girl whom Spanish missionaries called Angelina. It was well known to Spanish and French explorers and to missionaries in East Texas. Huntington, Texas
Huntington is a city in Angelina County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,025 at the 2020 census. The site is named for Collis Potter Huntington, the chairman of the board of the Southern Pacific Railroad when the town was formed and one of the Big Four. Huntington is known as the "Gateway to Lake Sam Rayburn". Geography Huntington is located in eastern Angelina County at (31.279227, –94.572881). U.S. Route 69 passes through the city, leading northwest to Lufkin, the county seat, and south to Woodville and to Beaumont. Lufkin, Texas
Lufkin is the largest city in Angelina County, Texas and the county seat. The city is situated in Deep East Texas and about 60 miles west of the Texas-Louisiana border. Its estimated population is 35,021 as of July 1, 2019. Lufkin was founded in 1884 and named for Abraham P. Lufkin. It originally served as a stop on the Houston, East and West Texas Railway. It was officially incorporated on October 15, 1890. Lufkin continued to serve as a stop on the railroad until 1890. Three businessmen founded Angelina Lumber Company, which led to much of the economic prosperity Lufkin later had. When the so-called "timber boom" came to an end, a new "golden era of expansion" began. Lufkin became more industrialized with the opening of Lufkin Industries and Southland Paper Mill.
