Orientation In the Scottish Highlands, Dull consists of a single street of houses on the north side of the valley of the River Tay. Etymology and translations The name ''Dull'' may be Pictish in origin and derived from the word ''*dol'' meaning "water-meadow, haugh" (Welsh ''dôl'') This would be cognate with the Gaelic ''dail'' meaning a meadow, but the modern Gaelic name of the town, from which the English is taken is "Dul" or "An Dul". Dull is a populated place in La Salle County, Texas La Salle County is a county in Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 6,664. Its county seat is Cotulla. History Brothers James and Andrew Dull owned a large ranch in La Salle County in the late 1800s. Tracts of the ranch were sold when it closed in 1901, and the community of Dull—named after the ranch—was established in 1912 on one of those tracts. The settlement was located along the San Antonio, Uvalde and Gulf Railroad. A post office—established in 1913—changed its name to "Nettaville" in 1915, and closed in 1919. During the 1940s, oil from a nearby well was loaded onto tank cars at Dull and then shipped by rail. Jack Dull
Jack L. Dull (January 2, 1930 – January 18, 1995) was an American scholar of the history of Han China and a professor at the University of Washington. Biography Born in 1930, Dull began his lifelong association with the University of Washington as an undergraduate, earning his B.A. in 1955. He was a graduate student there, completing his doctorate in 1966. He served in the faculty UW from 1963 until his death, rising from an Instructor to become Professor. According to colleagues, Dull's scholarly strength was his constant focus on probing the Sinological tradition in search of more profound meanings. In particular, his ability to interpret ancient texts and concepts of law was particularly noted. His ''oeuvre'', though small, has been influential. Professor Herbert Franke (sinologist), Herbert Franke of Munich cited Dull's "ability to elucidate the deep structures underlying the historical phenomena and the standardized terminology of the Chinese sources."Conlon 1995. Ryan Christopher Dull (born October 2, 1989) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the High Point Rockers of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. He has played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays. Career Early career Dull played high school baseball at East Forsyth High School in Kernersville, North Carolina where he is in the hall of fame for athletics and college baseball at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. ''Dulle Griet'' (anglicized as ''Dull Gret''), also known as ''Mad Meg'', is a figure of Flemish folklore who is the subject of a 1563 oil-on-panel by Flemish renaissance artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The painting depicts a virago, Dulle Griet, who leads an army of women to pillage Hell, and is currently held and exhibited at the Museum Mayer van den Bergh in Antwerp. History and description A restoration of the painting in 2018 revealed that it was painted in 1563, shortly after the painter had moved to Brussels. Previously, the signature and the date on the painting had been illegible, and it was assumed that it was painted two years earlier, or, based on its close compositional and stylistic similarity to '' The Fall of the Rebel Angels'' and ''The Triumph of Death'', one year earlier. Hugh The Dull, Lord Of Douglas
Hugh the Dull (1294 – between 1333 and 1346) was Lord of Douglas, a Scottish nobleman and cleric. The second son of William the Hardy, Lord of Douglas, William Wallace's companion in arms, and Eleanor Ferrers. Hugh's elder brother was Sir James Douglas, a hero of the Wars of Independence, and his younger was Sir Archibald Douglas, Guardian of the realm, and Scots commander at the Battle of Halidon Hill. Early life Hugh of Douglas is first heard of in 1296. Following the forfeiture of his father's English possessions, the two-year-old Hugh was taken into custody at Stebbing in Essex, one of his father's manors. Nothing further is heard of him until 1325 when he appeared by proxy as a canon of Glasgow Cathedral during a meeting of Chapter. He appears to have been at this time parish priest of Roxburgh.
