Duke Of Montalto (defunct)
Duke of Montalto ( es, Duque de Montalto) was a hereditary title in the Spanish nobility, Peerage of Spain, accompanied by the dignity of Grandee and granted in 1507 by Ferdinand II of Aragon, Ferdinand II to his nephew Ferdinando d'Aragona y Guardato, 1st Duke of Montalto, Fernando de Aragón y Guardato, who was an illegitimate son of Ferdinand I of Naples. In 1958, Luisa Isabel Álvarez de Toledo, 21st Duchess of Medina Sidonia, daughter of the last Duke, requested the rehabilitation of the Dukedom with the denomination of "Montalto de Aragón", so to differentiate it from the existing Duke of Montalto (title), Dukedom of Montalto also granted in 1507 by Ferdinand II of Aragon, Ferdinand II. The Francoist Spain, Francoist Government did not accept this request for unknown reasons, and so the title became extinct. Don José Álvarez de Toledo Osorio y Gonzaga, 11th Marquess of Villafranca, Grandee of Spain, ''jure uxoris'' Duke of Alba de Tormes, Grandee of Spain (16 July 1756 – 9 June 1796) was a patron of the artist Francisco Goya. Grandees of Spain ( es, Grandes de España) are the highest-ranking members of the Spanish nobility. They comprise nobles who hold the most important historical landed titles in Spain or its former colonies. Many such hereditary titles are held by heads of families, having been acquired via strategic marriages between landed families. All Grandees, of which there were originally three ranks, are now deemed to be of equal status (''i.e. "of the first class"''); this designation is nowadays titular, conveying neither power nor legal privileges. A grandeza ( Grandeeship) can be held regardless of possession of a title of nobility, however each ''grandeza'' was normally (although not always) granted in conjunction with a noble title. This is a list of the 149 present and extant royal and non-royal dukes in the peerage of the Kingdom of Spain. The oldest six titles – created between 1380 and 1476 – were Duke of Medina Sidonia (1380), Duke of Alburquerque (1464), Duke of Segorbe (1469), Duke of Alba (1472), Duke of Escalona (1472), and Duke of Infantado (1475). Spanish dukes have precedence over other ranks of Spanish nobility, nowadays all holding the court rank of '' Grande de España'', ''i.e.'' Grandee of the Realm. The Kingdom of Naples ( la, Regnum Neapolitanum; it, Regno di Napoli; nap, Regno 'e Napule), also known as the Kingdom of Sicily, was a state that ruled the part of the Italian Peninsula south of the Papal States between 1282 and 1816. It was established by the War of the Sicilian Vespers (1282–1302), when the island of Sicily revolted and was conquered by the Crown of Aragon, becoming a separate kingdom also called the Kingdom of Sicily. José Joaquín Álvarez de Toledo y Caro, 19th Duke of Medina Sidonia (28 December 1865 – 9 June 1915) was Duke of Medina Sidonia from 1905. In Madrid in 1893 he married his cousin Rosalía Caro y Caro. Biography He was born the second son of José Álvarez de Toledo y Silva, 18th Duke of Medina Sidonia, and Rosalía Caro y Álvarez de Toledo, daughter of the 4th Marquis of La Romana. He was originally the Marquis of Molina, but on the death of his older brother Alonso, he became the heir to all the titles of the house of Medina Sidonia.
