''Duke of Edinburgh Assassinated or The Vindication of Henry Parkes'' is a 1971 Australian play written by Bob Ellis and Dick Hall. It followed Ellis' successful ''The Legend of King O'Malley''. Background In 1970 Bob Ellis went to a party given by Gough Whitlam's secretary Dick Hall thinking he was going to be asked to write speeches for Whitlam. Instead Hall proposed they collaborate on a musical about the attempted assassination of Prince Alfred in Sydney in 1868. They wrote the play over weekends. Productions It premiered at the Nimrod Theatre in 1971 directed by Aarne Neame. Reviewing the 1971 production the ''Sydney Morning Herald'' critic felt the second half was better than the first. Bob Ellis
Robert James Ellis (10 May 1942 – 3 April 2016) was an Australian writer, journalist, filmmaker, and political commentator. He was a student at the University of Sydney at the same time as other notable Australians including Clive James, Germaine Greer, Les Murray, John Bell, Ken Horler, Robert Hughes and Mungo McCallum. He lived in Sydney with the author and screenwriter Anne Brooksbank; they had three children. Early years Ellis was raised a Seventh-day Adventist. ''The Legend of King O'Malley'' is a 1970 Australian musical play by Bob Ellis and Michael Boddy about politician King O'Malley. The original production was held at Jane Street Theatre in Randwick, Sydney, and starred Robyn Nevin and Kate Fitzpatrick. It was directed by John Bell (Australian actor), John Bell and was heavily revised throughout rehearsals.Leslie Rees, ''Australian Drama in the 1970s'', Angus & Robertson, 1978 p 17-22 It was a big success, commercially and critically, and toured Australia. Edward Gough Whitlam (11 July 191621 October 2014) was the 21st prime minister of Australia, serving from 1972 to 1975. Henry O'Farrell
Henry James O'Farrell (183321 April 1868) was the first person to attempt a political assassination in Australia. On 12 March 1868, he shot and wounded Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, the second son and fourth child of Queen Victoria. Biography O'Farrell was born in Arran Quay, Dublin, Ireland, the youngest child of William O'Farrell, a butcher. The family moved to Liverpool, then later migrated to Victoria. Henry O'Farrell was an alcoholic, and had been released from a lunatic asylum immediately before the attempted assassination. O'Farrell had briefly been employed by his brother, a Melbourne solicitor, who had offices in Ballarat, and is therefore sometimes described as a law clerk. The Nimrod Theatre Company, commonly known as The Nimrod, was an Australian theatre company based in Sydney. It was founded by in 1970 by Australian actor John Bell, Richard Wherrett and Ken Horler, and gained a reputation for producing more "good new Australian drama" from 1970 to 1985 than any other Australian theatre company. The company's original theatre located in Nimrod Street, Kings Cross is now home to Griffin Theatre Company. The company moved in 1974 to Belvoir Street, Surry Hills, but retained its original name. From 1981 to 1988 it also played in the Seymour Centre theatres. The company ceased operations in 1988. Subsequently, the Surry Hills venue became known as the Belvoir St Theatre.
