Biography Duke Maximilian was the only child of Duke Paul Wilhelm of Württemberg and Princess Maria Sophia of Thurn and Taxis, who lived in Württembergisches Palais, Württemberg Palace in Regensburg and whose marriage ended in divorce in 1835 after an early separation. Since the beginning of the 1870s he was the owner of the Württembergisches Palais, Württemberg Palace in Regensburg and the associated parks in today's Herzogspark. Taxis Castle (Trugenhofen)
Schloss Taxis (originally known as Burg Trugenhofen) is a privately owned castle in Dischingen in the Heidenheim district of Baden-Württemberg in Germany. The castle is owned by the princely house of Thurn und Taxis and is not open for visitors. History Originally built in the 13th century for the von Trugenhofen family, the castle was later owned by the Öttingern, the Helfenstein and the Katzenstein families. In 1734 it was inherited by the princely house of Thurn and Taxis. The family expanded the ''Burg'' (a medieval fortification) into a ''Schloss'' (English: castle; an ornate and comfortable building). In addition to expanding the original buildings, English gardens and terraces were added. Duke Eugen of Württemberg (german: Herzog Eugen Friedrich Heinrich von Württemberg; 21 November 1758 – 20 June 1822) was a German prince. He was the brother of Frederick I of Württemberg. Life Duke Eugen was born at Schwedt, Margraviate of Brandenburg, the third child of Frederick II Eugene, Duke of Württemberg (1732–1797), (son of Charles Alexander, Duke of Württemberg, and Princess Maria Augusta of Thurn and Taxis) and his wife, Margravine Sophia Dorothea of Brandenburg-Schwedt (1736–1798), (daughter of Frederick William, Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt and Princess Sophia Dorothea of Prussia). Eugen was educated by Johann Georg Schlosser, a brother of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The prince entered the Army of the Kingdom of Prussia. Princess Friederike Caroline Luise of Hesse-Darmstadt (20 August 1752 – 22 May 1782) was a member of the House of Hesse and by marriage a Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. She is the direct most recent common matrilineal ancestress (through women only) of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, King Albert II of Belgium, King Harald V of Norway and Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg. Life Friederike was born in Darmstadt, the eldest daughter of Prince George William of Hesse-Darmstadt, second son of Louis VIII, Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt, and Countess Maria Louise Albertine of Leiningen-Falkenburg-Dagsburg. Charles II (Charles Louis Frederick; 10 October 1741 – 6 November 1816) was ruler of the state of Mecklenburg-Strelitz from 1794 until his death. Originally ruling as duke, he was raised to the rank of grand duke in 1815. Prior to succeeding to the throne, he served as Governor of Hanover from 1776 to 1786. Friederike of Brandenburg-Schwedt (Friederike Sophia Dorothea; 18 December 1736 – 9 March 1798) was Duchess of Württemberg by marriage to Frederick II Eugene, Duke of Württemberg. Friedrich Eugen, Duke of Württemberg (21 January 1732 – 23 December 1797) was the fourth son of Karl Alexander, Duke of Württemberg, and Princess Maria Augusta of Thurn and Taxis (11 August 1706 – 1 February 1756). He was born in Stuttgart. From 1795 until 1797 he was Duke of Württemberg. Soldier After serving with Frederick the Great during the Seven Years' War, he took up residence in 1769 at his family's exclave, the County of Montbéliard, of which he was also made lieutenant-general in March 1786 by his eldest brother, Charles Eugene, Duke of Württemberg, who had begun to come into the inheritance of portions of the County of Limpurg in the 1780s. He bought the castle and lordship of Hochberg in 1779, but re-sold it in 1791 to his brother.
