Numbered Route
A route (or road) number, designation or abbreviation is an identifying numeric (or alphanumeric) designation assigned by a highway authority to a particular stretch of roadway to distinguish it from other routes and, in many cases, also to indicate its classification (e.g. motorway, primary route, regional road, etc.), general geographical location (in zonal numbering systems) and/or orientation (north-south v. east-west). The numbers chosen may be used solely for internal administrative purposes; however, in most cases they are also displayed on roadside signage and indicated on maps. Use of letters Letters are often used in road designations to indicate a class of roadways. Within such a class, roads are distinguished from each other by a road number. Lake Ontario
Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. It is bounded on the north, west, and southwest by the Canadian province of Ontario, and on the south and east by the U.S. state of New York. The Canada–United States border spans the centre of the lake. The Canadian cities of Toronto, Kingston, Mississauga, and Hamilton are located on the lake's northern and western shorelines, while the American city of Rochester is located on the south shore. In the Huron language, the name means "great lake". Its primary inlet is the Niagara River from Lake Erie. Banda, Ontario
Banda is an unincorporated rural community in Dufferin County, Ontario, Canada. Officially located in Mulmur Township, Banda has historically been associated with both Mulmur Township and Nottawasaga Township (now Clearview Township), because it is located on the boundary between both townships. History Duff Lott and his grandson John were early settlers, arriving in the spring of 1845. A log schoolhouse, S.S. No. 6, was built in 1857, and a post office opened in 1860. The name "Banda" was selected by the first postmaster, John Clemenger, after looking at a map of the East Indies where the Banda Islands and Banda Sea are located. That same year, the population of Banda had reached 50. During the 1860s, Banda was noted as having a wagon shop, shoemaker, blacksmith, carpenter, cabinetmaker, and stores. Highway 9 (Ontario)
King's Highway 9, commonly referred to as Highway 9, is a provincially maintained highway in the Canadian province of Ontario. Highway 9 has been divided into two segments since January 1, 1998, when the segment between Harriston and Orangeville was downloaded to the various counties in which it resided. The western segment of the highway begins at Highway 21 in Kincardine, near the shores of Lake Huron. It travels to the junction of Highway 23 and Highway 89 in Harriston. The central segment is now known as Wellington County Road 109 and Dufferin County Road 109. At Highway 10 in Orangeville, Highway 9 resumes and travels east to Highway 400. The highway once continued east to Yonge Street in Newmarket, but is now known as York Regional Road 31. Melancthon, Ontario
Melancthon is a rural Canadian township in the northwest corner of Dufferin County, Ontario, bordered on the east by Mulmur Township, Amaranth Township and East Luther Grand Valley to the south, Southgate Township to the west, and the Municipality of Grey Highlands to the north. The township does not include the town of Shelburne on its southern border. It has one of the lowest population densities in southwestern Ontario. The primary industry of the township is farming, with limited beef, dairy, sheep and horse farming. It is also home to the Melancthon EcoPower Centre wind farm. The township was founded in 1853 as a part of Grey County and transferred to Dufferin County in 1881. Township council currently comprises Mayor Darren White, a deputy mayor and three councillors. Highway 89 (Ontario)
King's Highway 89, commonly referred to as Highway 89, is an east–west provincially maintained highway in the south central portion of the Canadian province of Ontario, stretching from the junction of Highway 9 and Highway 23 in Harriston in the west, to Highway 400 just east of Cookstown in the east. The principal urban centres along the highway include Alliston, Shelburne and Mount Forest. Outside these towns, the highway travels through rural farmland across a large part of southwestern Ontario. Highway 89 was established in 1937 as a result of the rerouting of Highway 9 between Orangeville and Highway 27. In 1963, the route was extended west to Palmerston and east to Highway 400. Amaranth, Ontario
Amaranth is a township located in Dufferin County, Ontario, Canada, with a Canada 2011 Census, 2011 population of 3,963. It is Amaranth, named after the plant which grows abundantly within its borders. It is bordered by Mono, Ontario, Mono to the east and East Luther, Ontario, East Luther to the west. The hamlet of Laurel is located on the 5th Line (or County Road 12) and 10th Sideroad (or County Road 10). Laurelwoods Elementary School is located just outside this community, on the 6th Line and 10th Sideroad. The township building is also at this location, and has a park with baseball diamonds and soccer fields on its property. Amaranth's system of naming roads is similar to that of the Dufferin County townships of Mono and Mulmur, and the Simcoe County townships of Adjala and Tosorontio. Dundalk, Ontario
Dundalk (named after Dundalk in Ireland), first called McDowell's Corners, was originally located on the Toronto-Sydenham Road (now Hwy.10), but moved about a mile to the west to be closer to the Toronto Grey and Bruce railway when it went through in the 1870s. Dundalk was incorporated as a village in 1887. On January 1, 2000, it was amalgamated with the Township of Proton and the Township of Egremont to form the Township of Southgate, in the southeast corner of Grey County. The mayor of Southgate is Briane Milne. Dundalk services the surrounding agricultural area and also has a few small manufacturing plants. Dundalk has the highest elevation of any populated place in southern Ontario at 526m (1,735 feet). A rail line that used to pass through Dundalk is now removed, but its roadbed has become a multi-use trail sponsored by the federal government.
