''Duelle (Une )'' is a 1976 experimental fantasy drama directed by Jacques Rivette. The main title is a neologistic feminine form for the noun "duel." The director-assigned English title is ''Twhylight'', a combination of "twilight" and "why". The film stars Juliet Berto as the Queen of the Night who battles the Queen of the Sun (Bulle Ogier) over a magical diamond that will allow the winner to remain on earth, specifically modern-day Paris. Jacques Rivette
Jacques Rivette (; 1 March 1928 – 29 January 2016) was a French film director and film critic most commonly associated with the French New Wave and the film magazine ''Cahiers du Cinéma''. He made twenty-nine films, including ''L'amour fou'' (1969), ''Out 1'' (1971), '' Celine and Julie Go Boating'' (1974), and ''La Belle Noiseuse'' (1991). His work is noted for its improvisation, loose narratives, and lengthy running times. Inspired by Jean Cocteau to become a filmmaker, Rivette shot his first short film at age twenty. He moved to Paris to pursue his career, frequenting Henri Langlois' Cinémathèque Française and other ciné-clubs; there, he met François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Éric Rohmer, Claude Chabrol and other future members of the New Wave. Jean Wiener (or Wiéner) (19 March 1896, 14th arrondissement of Paris – 8 June 1982, Paris) was a French pianist and composer. Life Wiener was trained at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied alongside Darius Milhaud, and worked with Erik Satie. He then embarked on a career as concert impresario, composer and pianist. Nicole Lubtchansky was a French film editor who worked primarily with director Jacques Rivette. She edited twenty of Rivette's films, starting with 1969's ''L'amour fou'' and concluding with 2009's ''Around a Small Mountain''. In between, Lubtchansky edited such acclaimed Rivette films as '' Celine and Julie Go Boating'', ''Love on the Ground'' and '' La Belle Noiseuse''. William Lubtchansky
William Lubtchansky (26 October 1937 – 4 May 2010) was a French cinematographer. Biography Lubtchansky's first film was Agnès Varda's 1965 short, ''Elsa la Rose''. He shot over 100 films, including several for Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette, Jean Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet and Nadine Trintignant. He has also worked with Philippe Garrel, François Truffaut, Marcel Camus and Peter Brook (for the 1989 6-hour version of ''The Mahabharata''). Juliet Berto (16 January 1947 – 10 January 1990), born Annie Jamet, was a French actress, director and screenwriter. A member of the same loose group of student radicals as Anne Wiazemsky, she first appeared in Jean-Luc Godard's ''Two or Three Things I Know About Her'', and would go on to appear in many of Godard's subsequent films, including ''La Chinoise'', '' Week End'', '' Le Gai Savoir'', and '' Vladimir et Rosa''. Maria Ludovica (Marilù) Parolini (1931–2012) was an Italian photographer and screenwriter. Parolini moved to Paris in 1957 and worked as a secretary at '' Cahiers du cinéma'' from 1960 to 1962. There she met members of the French New Wave and worked as a set photographer for Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Jacques Rivette and Agnès Varda, taking some of the most iconic photographs of the New Wave.
