The Duchy of Teschen (german: Herzogtum Teschen), also Duchy of Cieszyn ( pl, Księstwo Cieszyńskie) or Duchy of Těšín ( cs, Těšínské knížectví), was one of the Duchies of Silesia centered on Cieszyn () in Upper Silesia. It was split off the Silesian Duchy of Opole and Racibórz in 1281 during the feudal division of Poland and was ruled by Silesian dukes of the Piast dynasty from 1290 until the line became extinct with the death of Duchess Elizabeth Lucretia in 1653. The ducal lands initially comprised former Lesser Polish territories east of the Biała River, which in about 1315 again split off as the Polish Duchy of Oświęcim, while the remaining duchy became a fiefdom of the Bohemian kings in 1327 and was incorporated into the Lands of the Bohemian Crown in 1348. Wenceslaus I of Cieszyn ( pl, Wacław I cieszyński, cs, Václav I. Těšínský, german: Wenzel I. von Teschen; 1413/18 – 1474), was a Duke of Cieszyn from 1431 (until 1442 with his brothers as co-rulers), Duke of half of Bytom during 1431–1452 (returned to him soon after until 1459) and Duke of Siewierz (until 1443). He was the oldest son of Duke Bolesław I of Cieszyn by his second wife Euphemia, daughter of Duke Siemowit IV of Masovia. Wenceslaus II of Cieszyn ( pl, Wacław II cieszyński; 1488/96 – 17 November 1524) was a Duke of Cieszyn from 1518 until his death (as co-ruler of his father). He was the second son of Casimir II, Duke of Cieszyn, by his wife Johanna Poděbrady, daughter of Victor, Duke of Münsterberg and Duke of Opawa. Life The decision of Casimir II to destine his eldest son Frederick to the Church career placed Wenceslaus as the presumed successor of his father. Frederick's death in 1507 led Wenceslaus II as the sole heir of Casimir II, but it wasn't until 1518 that he was named co-ruler of the Duchy of Cieszyn. However, he died four years before his father, so Wenceslaus II never ruled alone.
