Maria Anna Josepha of Bavaria (''Maria Anna Josepha Augusta''; 7 August 1734 – 7 May 1776) was a Duchess of Bavaria by birth and Margravine of Baden-Baden by marriage. She was nicknamed the ''savior of Bavaria''. She is also known as ''Maria Josepha'' and is sometimes styled as a ''princess of Bavaria''. Biography Maria Anna Josepha was born at the Nymphenburg Palace in 1734. She was the fifth child of Charles Albert, Elector of Bavaria (later Holy Roman Emperor) and his wife Maria Amalia of Austria. She was baptised with the names ''Maria Anna Josepha Augusta''. A member of the House of Wittelsbach, rulers of the Electorate of Bavaria, she was styled a Duchess of Bavaria. Georg Desmarées or Des Marées, (29 October 1697 – 3 October 1776) was a Swedish-born German portrait painter. Biography Desmarées was born in 1697 at Stockholm, Sweden. He was the son of immigrant parents Jean Desmarées and Sara Meijteris. He was instructed in painting by a maternal relative, Martin Meytens (1648–1736), and later he became his assistant. In 1724 he made a stay in Amsterdam, and in the following year in Nuremberg where he visited the drawing academy of Johann Daniel Preissler (1666 –1737) and then in Venice, where he received further training from Italian Rococo painter Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (ca 1682–1754). In 1731, he married Barbara Marie Schuhbauer and settled in Munich where he became a court painter. His wife died in 1743. He continued to reside in Munich until his own death in 1776. Palatinate-Sulzbach was the name of two separate states of the Holy Roman Empire located in modern Amberg-Sulzbach, Bavaria, Germany, ruled by a branch of the House of Wittelsbach. Palatinate-Sulzbach (1569–1604) Palatinate-Sulzbach was partitioned from Palatinate-Zweibrücken upon the death of Wolfgang, Count Palatine of Zweibrücken in 1569.
