Comte de Lautréamont () was the ''nom de plume'' of Isidore Lucien Ducasse (4 April 1846 – 24 November 1870), a French poet born in Uruguay. His only works, ''Les Chants de Maldoror'' and ''Poésies'', had a major influence on modern arts and literature, particularly on the Surrealists and the Situationists. Ducasse died at the age of 24. Biography Youth Ducasse was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, to François Ducasse, a French consular officer, and his wife Jacquette-Célestine Davezac. Very little is known about Isidore's childhood, except that he was baptized on 16 November 1847 in the Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral and that his mother died soon afterwards, possibly due to an epidemic. Jean-Jacques Lefrère suggests she may have committed suicide, although concludes there is no way to know for certain. The Ducasse d'Ath is a traditional parade held to mark the victory of David over Goliath that takes place in the town of Ath in Belgium. The parade is held on the fourth Sunday of August every year and is characterised by the presence of processional giants depicting many characters from local history. From 2008 to 2022, it was recognised as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. History The city of Ath was founded in 1140 by Baldwin IV, Count of Hainaut, by buying territory from his liegeman, Gilles de Trazegnies. The city experienced considerable expansion in the 14th century, with a church dedicated to Saint Julian of Brioude coming up outside the enclosure of the walled city. Vladimir Ducasse (; born October 15, 1987) is a Haitian-born former American football offensive guard. He was drafted by the New York Jets in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He played college football at Massachusetts. High school career A native of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Ducasse moved to the United States in 2002. He attended Stamford High School in Stamford, Connecticut, where he was a three-sport star in football, basketball and track. Micaela "Kai" Martinez DuCasse (1913–1989) was an American artist, author, and educator, known for her murals and sculptures. She was the daughter of Elsie Whitaker Martinez and painter Xavier Martínez. From 1955 to 1978 she taught at the San Francisco College for Women. Biography Micaela Martinez was born on August 26, 1913, in San Francisco, California, to Elsie Whitaker Martinez and painter Xavier Martinez. Although her father was born in Mexico, he never spoke Spanish at home and never taught her. She started drawing at the age of 3, studying with her father. At the age of 7 she expressed wanting to become a religious painter. Neither of her parents were particularly religious but she was sent to attend classes at the Catholic convent. Biography Ducasse became French national champion cyclo-cross in 1967, and was offered a contract for the Pelforth team. He joined the 1967 Vuelta a España in support of Jan Janssen. 1967 Vuelta a España During that Vuelta, Ducasse was in escape groups in the fourth and fifth stage, and became the leader in the general classification. In the mountains, other cyclists attacked, but with the help from Janssen, Ducasse was able to keep his time losses limited. Jean-Baptiste du Casse (2 August 1646 – 25 June 1715) was a French privateer, admiral, and colonial administrator who served throughout the Atlantic World during the 17th and 18th centuries. Likely born 2 August 1646 in Saubusse, near Pau (Béarn), to a Huguenot family, du Casse joined the French merchant marine and served in the East India Company and the slave-trading Compagnie du Sénégal. Later, he joined the French Navy and took part in several victorious expeditions during the War of the League of Augsburg in the West Indies and Spanish South America. During the War of the Spanish Succession, he participated in several key naval battles, including the Battle of Málaga and the siege of Barcelona. Alain Ducasse (; born 13 September 1956) is a French-born Monégasque chef. He operates a number of restaurants including Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester which holds three stars (the top rating) in the Michelin Guide.
