Alfred Du Cane
Alfred Richard du Cane (2 April 1835 – 19 October 1882) was an English clergyman and a cricketer who played first-class cricket for Cambridge University Cricket Club and other amateur sides in 1854 and 1855. He was born at Southampton in Hampshire and died at St John's Wood, London. Du Cane was the fourth son of a Royal Navy officer and part of the Du Cane family that owned Braxted Park in Essex. His older brother was Charles du Cane, a politician and colonial administrator who also played first-class cricket. Du Cane was educated at Harrow School and at Trinity College, Cambridge. There are no records that show that he played cricket at Harrow, but at Cambridge University he appeared in several matches in both the 1854 and 1855 seasons, played principally on account of his bowling; it is not known whether he was right- or left-handed at either batting or bowling, nor what style of bowling he practised. Charles Du Cane
Sir Charles Du Cane (5 December 1825 – 25 February 1889) was a British Conservative Party politician and colonial administrator who was a Member of Parliament between 1852 and 1854 and Governor of Tasmania from 1868 to 1874. Du Cane was born in Ryde on the Isle of Wight in 1825, the son of Charles Du Cane of Braxted Park and Frances Prideaux-Brune. He was educated at Charterhouse School in Surrey and Exeter College, Oxford. From 1848 to 1855, Du Cane played first-class cricket for the Marylebone Cricket Club as a batsman; a younger brother, Alfred, also played first-class cricket. In 1852, he was elected to the House of Commons as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Maldon in Essex, but his election was declared void after it was discovered that Du Cane's agents had been involved in bribery although it was established that Du Cane was unaware of the corruption. Edmund Frederick Du Cane
Sir Edmund Frederick Du Cane (23 March 1830 – 7 June 1903) was an English major-general of the Royal Engineers and prison administrator. Early life Born at Colchester, Essex on 23 March 1830, he was youngest child in a family of four sons and two daughters of Major Richard Du Cane (1788–1832), 20th Light Dragoons; his mother was Eliza, daughter of Thomas Ware of Woodfort, Mallow, County Cork. After Dedham grammar school to 1843, and a private coaching establishment at Wimbledon (1843–46), he entered the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich in November 1846. He passed out at the head of his batch at the end of 1848, having taken first place in mathematics and fortification. Du Cane received a commission as second lieutenant in the Royal Engineers on 19 December 1848. Ella Du Cane
Ella Du Cane (1874-1943) was a British artist best known for her watercolors of landscapes and exotic locales. Early life Ella Mary Du Cane was the third and youngest daughter of politician and colonial administrator Sir Charles Du Cane and his wife, Georgiana Susan Copley. Through her mother, she was the great-granddaughter of the artist, John Singleton Copley. She was born in Hobart, Tasmania in the last year of her father's five-year term as Governor of Tasmania, shortly before the family returned to their country house at Braxted Park, Essex. In Essex, Charles was made a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George and served as Chairman of the Board of Customs. Her sister Florence was born in 1869. Ella made watercolor paintings and Florence was a writer. After their father died in 1889 they decided that they would travel the world unchaperoned. John Du Cane is an author and CEO of the companDragon Door Publications He has written various books, videos and DVDs about tai chi and qigong. John Du Cane was born in Africa in 1949. He studied at Cambridge University. He made thirty-four films between 1972 and 1975 during a brief period of activity in which he was associated with the London Film-Makers' Co-op. At the same time, he was an advocate of new work by British and international film artists, writing weekly previews and articles for Time Out and other magazines of the period. Peter Du Cane, The Elder
Peter Du Cane (alias Du Quesne) (17 March 1645 – 16 September 1714), a descendant of Jean Du Quesne, the elder and son of Pierre du Quesne and Jeanne Maurois, was a third generation English-born descendant in a family of prominent and noble Huguenot refugees who escaped from Flanders and originally settled in Canterbury in the reign of Elizabeth I, following the persecutions carried on in the low countries under the Duke of Alba. The second generation of the family settled in London and acquired citizenship (see Jean Du Quesne, the younger). Peter Du Cane (boat Designer)
Peter Du Cane (1901–1984) was a Royal Navy commander and managing director of the engineering company Vospers. He assisted in the development of the '' Blue Bird II'' amongst other boats. Biography Du Cane was born in 1901, the son of Charles Henry Copely Du Cane, of Braxted Park. His paternal grandfather Sir Charles Du Cane was a politician and colonial administrator; his paternal grandmother Georgiana was the daughter of John Copley, 1st Baron Lyndhurst. He joined the Royal Navy as a thirteen-year-old before resigning his commission as a Lieutenant-Commander in 1928. Richard Du Cane
Richard Du Cane (13 October 1681 – 3 October 1744) was a British businessman and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1715 to 1722. Du Cane was the son of Peter Du Cane, the elder and his wife Jane Booth, daughter of Richard Booth, a London merchant. The Du Cane family was of distinguished Huguenot descent and was a leading Essex family of merchants and politicians. He married Anne Lyde, daughter of Nehemiah Lyde of Coggeshall and his wife Priscilla Reade on 17 August 1710. By his marriage, he acquired a substantial property near Colchester. Du Cane was a prominent businessman in the City of London, and served as a director of the Bank of England between 1710 and 1730. He was elected as a Whig Member of Parliament for Colchester (Essex) at the 1715 general election. Du Cane Court
Du Cane Court is an Art Deco apartment block on Balham High Road, Balham, south London. A distinctive local landmark, it was opened in 1937 and, with 677 apartments, is the largest privately owned block of flats under one roof in Europe. It was a popular place to live for many music hall stars in the 1930s and 1940s and boasted a social club, on the top floor, before the area was converted into flats. Past residents have included the comedian Tommy Trinder. Currently comedian and writer Arthur Smith, the self-styled 'Bard of Balham', is a resident. During the Second World War it was speculated that Du Cane Court had escaped bombing because it was planned for use by military officers in the event of a successful German invasion. Du Cane Range
The Du Cane Range is a mountain range in the Central Highlands region of Tasmania, Australia. An unnamed peak on the main ridge of the Du Cane Range has an elevation of above sea level and is the eleventh highest mountain peak in Tasmania. Major peaks in the range include The Acropolis, Mount Geryon, The Parthenon, Mount Eros, Mount Hyperion, Mount Massif, Mount Achilles, and Falling Mountain. Tasmania's highest peak at an elevation of is nearby, but not in the Du Cane Range. The range is a major feature of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, and is a popular venue with bushwalkers and mountain climbers.
