Drury A. Hinton
Drury Andrew Hinton (May 4, 1839 -- October 10, 1909) was a Virginia lawyer, Confederate soldier, politician, and judge who most notably served on Virginia's Supreme Court of Appeals from January 1, 1883 until December 31, 1894. Early and family life His father, Erasmus Gill Hinton, was a banker. Drury Hinton had a brother, William E. Hinton, who likewise became a Confederate officer, then private banker, stockbroker and important financier in postwar Petersburg. Another brother was Dr. Samuel Hinton of Petersburg. After a private education appropriate to his class, Hinton studied law at the University of Virginia until interrupted by the War Between the States. American Civil War The Civil War interrupted his studies. In March 1861, Hinton joined the 41st Virginia Infantry of the Confederate Army, and fought throughout the war, surrendering at Appomattox courthouse. This is a list of past and present judges of the Supreme Court of Virginia. The court's name was the Supreme Court of Appeals until it was changed in 1971.The Constitution of Virginia#Current constitution, Constitution of 1971 designated the court only as the Supreme Court. All prior constitutions, beginning with the Constitution of Virginia#1776, Constitution of 1776, designated the court as the Supreme Court of Appeals. Petersburg Railroad
The Petersburg Railroad ran from Petersburg, Virginia, south to Garysburg, North Carolina, from which it ran to Weldon via trackage rights over the Seaboard and Roanoke Railroad (later eliminated with a new alignment). History Founding In 1830 the North Carolina General Assembly and Virginia General Assembly ( state legislatures) granted a charter for the Petersburg Railroad and it opened in 1833. The railroad was partially sponsored by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Against the wishes of the Railroad's principal owner, Francis E. Rives, the State also sponsored the additional Portsmouth and Roanoke Railroad. While the railroads competed, a wheat farmer could get twice the price per bushel for his wheat, by getting to market to meet advertised demands more quickly. Wood Boulden, also known as Wood Bouldin, (January 20, 1811 – October 10, 1876) was a Virginia lawyer, plantation owner and politician. He served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia from 1872 to 1876. Early and family life Born in Charlotte County, Virginia to the former Ann Lewis and her husband, Congressman Thomas Bouldin, he was named for his grandfather Wood Bouldin, who had married Joanna, the aunt of U.S. President John Tyler. Thus among the First Families of Virginia even in his early youth, Bouldin was sent to Richmond to receive a private education from Mr. Turner. He then was sent to Bedford County, Virginia to attend the New London Academy conducted by Rev. Nicholas H. Cobbs, later the bishop of Alabama. After teaching school for a year, Bouldin moved to Halifax County, Virginia and studied law under William Leigh.
