Drum Rock () is an insular rock in the Argentine Islands, Graham Coast, rising above sea level on the eastern edge of the Forge Islands, between Smooth Island and Grotto Island. Argentine Islands
The Argentine Islands are a group of islands in the Wilhelm Archipelago of Antarctica, situated southwest of Petermann Island, and northwest of Cape Tuxen on Kyiv Peninsula in Graham Land. They were discovered by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1903–05, under Jean-Baptiste Charcot, and named by him for the Argentine Republic, in appreciation of that government's support of his expedition. History The British Graham Land Expedition under John Riddoch Rymill was based in the Argentine Islands in 1935 and conducted a thorough survey of them. The expedition built a hut on Winter Island (Antarctica), Winter Island, which was used as their northern base; it was left in place at the end of the expedition, but destroyed circa 1946. The Forge Islands () are a group of small islands lying northeast of The Barchans and northwest of Grotto Island, in the Argentine Islands, Wilhelm Archipelago. They were charted and named the "Horseshoe Islands" by the British Graham Land Expedition under John Rymill, 1934–37. Smooth Island (Antarctica)
Smooth Island is the northeasternmost of the Forge Islands, Argentine Islands, in the Wilhelm Archipelago. The name, given by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) in 1961, is descriptive of the smooth, ice-free surface of this island, which is a useful navigational mark for vessels approaching Bloor Passage from the north. Grotto Island
Galindez Island ( uk, Ґаліндез) is an island long, lying immediately east of Winter Island in the Argentine Islands, Wilhelm Archipelago. It was discovered by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1903–05, under Jean-Baptiste Charcot, who named it for Commander Ismael Galindez of the Argentine Navy, who was dispatched in the ''Uruguay'' to search for Charcot, when the expedition was feared lost early in 1905. The island was recharted by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) under John Riddoch Rymill, 1934–37. The BGLE hut on Winter Island disappeared in mysterious circumstances (possibly due to a tsunami) in 1946. A new hut was set up on 7 January 1947 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), becoming known officially as Station F ("Wordie Hut", after James Wordie). British Antarctic Survey
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is the United Kingdom's national polar research institute. It has a dual purpose, to conduct polar science, enabling better understanding of global issues, and to provide an active presence in the Antarctic on behalf of the UK. It is part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). With over 400 staff, BAS takes an active role in Antarctic affairs, operating five research stations, one ship and five aircraft in both polar regions, as well as addressing key global and regional issues. The Vernadsky Research Base ( uk, Антарктична станція Академік Вернадський) is a Ukrainian Antarctic Station at Marina Point on Galindez Island in the Argentine Islands, not far from Kyiv Peninsula. The region is under territorial claims between three countries (see Territorial claims in Antarctica). The single Ukrainian Antarctic station is named after the mineralogist Vladimir Vernadsky (1863–1945) who was the first president of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
