Dropsonde (album)
''Dropsonde'' is an ambient album by musician Biosphere (alias Geir Jenssen). Unlike his previous output, there is a notable jazz influence present on this album. Overview The title refers to a dropsonde, a device designed to be dropped at altitude by parachute to collect data as the device falls to the ground (on Earth or sent to another planet.) A ''Dropsonde'' sampler was pre-released on vinyl as a mini album on 27 September 2005 and the full album released on compact disc in January 2006 (though the track "In the Shape of a Flute" remained exclusive to the vinyl sampler). Unlike Jenssen's previous output, there is a notable jazz influence present on this album (such as on the tracks "Birds Fly By Flapping Their Wings" and "In Triple Time"), evocative of Miles Davis's 1970s jazz fusion works. A resident of Tromsø within the Arctic Circle, Jenssen is well known for ambient and ambient house pieces, often inspired by Arctic or mountain settings, and his use of loops and peculiar samples from science fiction and natural sources. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. The album presents a striking difference from others in the Biosphere catalog due to its percussionless, minimalistic soundscapes consisting mostly of white noise and the sounds of the Mir space station, related to drone music. ''Cho Oyu 8201m – Field Recordings From Tibet'' is an ambient album released by artist Biosphere under his real name Geir Jenssen. Recorded in 2001, it was released in 2006. Overview Geir Jenssen is an active climber and mountaineer, a hobby which is an inspiration on his work as well as a source of natural sound samples. His highest feat was in September–October 2001 when he climbed the Cho Oyu (Himalaya, 8201 meters) without supplementary oxygen. Dropsonde
A dropsonde is an expendable weather reconnaissance device created by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), designed to be dropped from an aircraft at altitude over water to measure (and therefore track) storm conditions as the device falls to the surface. The sonde contains a GPS receiver, along with pressure, temperature, and humidity (PTH) sensors to capture atmospheric profiles and thermodynamic data. It typically relays this data to a computer in the aircraft by radio transmission. Usage Dropsonde instruments are typically the only current method to measure the winds and barometric pressure through the atmosphere and down to the sea surface within the core of tropical cyclones far from land-based weather radar. Miles Davis
Miles Dewey Davis III (May 26, 1926September 28, 1991) was an American trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th-century music. Davis adopted a variety of musical directions in a five-decade career that kept him at the forefront of many major stylistic developments in jazz. Born in Alton, Illinois, and raised in East St. Louis, Davis left to study at Juilliard in New York City, before dropping out and making his professional debut as a member of saxophonist Charlie Parker's bebop quintet from 1944 to 1948. Cho Oyu
__NOTOC__ Cho Oyu (Nepali: चोयु; ; ) is the sixth-highest mountain in the world at above sea level. Cho Oyu means "Turquoise Goddess" in Tibetan. The mountain is the westernmost major peak of the ''Khumbu'' sub-section of the Mahalangur Himalaya 20 km west of Mount Everest. The mountain stands on the China TibetNepal Province No. 1 border. Just a few kilometres west of Cho Oyu is Nangpa La (5,716m/18,753 ft), a glaciated pass that serves as the main trading route between the Tibetans and the Khumbu's Sherpas.
