Drentsche Aa National Landscape
National Park Drentsche Aa is a national park of the Netherlands located in the province of Drenthe on the west side of the Hondsrug. It consists of the cultural landscape surrounding the valley of the small river the Drentsche Aa. The landscape is currently nearly the same as it was in the mid 19th century, as the several agricultural landscape reforms of the 20th century were not implemented in this area. Drenthe
Drenthe () is a province of the Netherlands located in the northeastern part of the country. It is bordered by Overijssel to the south, Friesland to the west, Groningen to the north, and the German state of Lower Saxony to the east. As of November 2019, Drenthe had a population of 493,449 and a total area of . Drenthe has been populated for 15,000 years. The region has subsequently been part of the Episcopal principality of Utrecht, Habsburg Netherlands, Dutch Republic, Batavian Republic, Kingdom of Holland and Kingdom of the Netherlands. List Of National Parks Of The Netherlands
National parks in the Netherlands were defined in the 1960s as areas of at least 10 km² consisting of natural terrains, water and/or forests, with a special landscape and flora and fauna. The first two national parks were founded in the 1930s by private organisations. The first official national park, Schiermonnikoog National Park, was not established until 1989. The most recent national park to have been established is the Nieuw Land National Park, which was established in 2018. In 2011, the government decided to make the provinces responsible for the national parks. As of 2021, there are 21 national parks. The spur of the Hondsrug in Groningen has led to the creation of various villages build on artificial dwelling hills: Adorp, Sauwerd, Wetsinge, Winsum, Baflo, Rasquert, Warffum, Usquert, Rottum. The name "''Hondsrug''" would appear to be taken from the Dutch word for "dog" or "hound" (''hond'') and the word for a "back" or "ridge" (''rug''). However, it is more likely a bastardization of the older name ''Hunze-rug'', coming from the name of the Hunze River, which flows through Drenthe and Groningen. Up until the 19th century the ''Hondsrug'' was also known as the ''Bisschopsrug'', meaning "Bishop's Ridge". The Drentsche Aa () is a river rising in the Dutch province of Drenthe, flowing through Drenthe and for the last part the province of Groningen. It ends in the Schipsloot near Haren, which flows into the Noord-Willemskanaal; however, originally it ended into the Selwerderdiep. The water finally ends in the Lauwersmeer and Waddenzee. In Groningen and the northernmost part of Drenthe the water is known as Drentsche Aa (sometimes Aa in Groningen), but in Drenthe it has a multitude of local names, such as ''Deurzerdiep'', ''Looner Diep'', ''Taarlosche Diep'', ''Oudemolensche Diep'', ''Schipborgsche Diep'', and ''Westerdiep''.
