Drenthe Hermits
In October 2019, 67-year-old Gerrit-Jan van Dorsten and his six adult children were discovered in Ruinerwold, a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe, where they had lived after March 2009 for nine years after in seclusion in a farm house where only the 58-year-old man who rented the house had been seen around. Details about discovery The adult children were thought to be aged 18 to 25. The family was found after the oldest child Israel, who has also called himself Jan, 25, left the house and spoke to local people in Ruinerwold. He had already become active on social media for a few months. His pictures show that he sometimes left the house after dark to go to the village. One of the children stated that they had never been to school. None of the six adult children were in official records of births and citizens. Ruinerwold
Ruinerwold is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is located in the municipality of De Wolden, about 6 km northeast of Meppel. History The village was first mentioned in 1792 as Ruiner wold, and means "woods belonging to Ruinen". Ruinerwold is a road village which developed on a sandy ridge in the 12th century. The Dutch Reformed church is located in the former hamlet of which has merged into Ruinerwold. It has been built in the 15th century using material of this predecessor which was built around 1150 and had been damaged by fire. The upper part of the tower was restored after a 1730 fire. Rich farmers formerly lived in Ruinerwold, where they constructed expansive farms with ornate embellishments. Ruinerwold was home to 1,245 people in 1840. Ruinerwold was a separate municipality until 1998, when it became part of De Wolden. A hermit, also known as an eremite (adjectival form: hermitic or eremitic) or solitary, is a person who lives in seclusion. Eremitism plays a role in a variety of religions.
