Dreamland, Michigan
Dreamland is an unincorporated community on Copper Island (the Keweenaw Peninsula), in Torch Lake Township, Houghton County, in the Upper Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. It has been described as being a "district of Bootjack" or in Bootjack, but it is a separate town. The town consists almost entirely of the Dreamland Inn (sometimes called the Dreamland Bar & Restaurant, Dreamland Hotel or "Dreamland Hotel and bar;" it is often referred to as being in Lake Linden—due to that being its mailing address) and some docks on Torch Bay. History Dreamland was founded in 1913 with the building of the resort (containing a bar and hotel rooms often frequented by loggers unable to make it home in the winter) by Norbert Sarazin. A dance pavilion, originally quite a local attraction, burned in 1921 and Prohibition caused the closing of the bar; it reopened in 1947. Logging was formerly the main industry in the town. Copper Island
Copper Island is a local name given to the northern part of the Keweenaw Peninsula (projecting northeastward into Lake Superior at the western end of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States of America), separated from the rest of the Keweenaw Peninsula by Portage Lake and the Keweenaw Waterway. Geography The area was "isolated" by dredging in 1859 and construction in the 1860s of a ship canal across an isthmus of the Keweenaw Peninsula from Portage Lake—on the east side of the Keweenaw Peninsula—to Lake Superior on the west. The ship canal is wide and deep. The resulting "island" was called ''Kuparisaari'' (meaning "Copper Island") by Finnish, Irish, and French/French Canadian settlers in the area. Lake Effect Snow
Lake-effect snow is produced during cooler atmospheric conditions when a cold air mass moves across long expanses of warmer lake water. The lower layer of air, heated up by the lake water, picks up water vapor from the lake and rises up through the colder air above. The vapor then freezes and is deposited on the leeward (downwind) shores. The same effect also occurs over bodies of saline water, when it is termed ocean-effect or bay-effect snow. The effect is enhanced when the moving air mass is uplifted by the orographic influence of higher elevations on the downwind shores. This uplifting can produce narrow but very intense bands of precipitation, which deposit at a rate of many inches of snow each hour, often resulting in a large amount of total snowfall. Lake Linden, Michigan
Lake Linden is a village in Houghton County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,007 at the 2010 census. The village is mostly within Schoolcraft Township, though a tiny portion lies in Torch Lake Township. History Lake Linden was named for an early settler. A fire destroyed most of Lake Linden in 188 Lake Linden hosted minor league baseball from 1904 to 1906. The Lake Linden Lakers played as members of the Class C level Northern-Copper Country League and Copper Country Soo League. Lake Linden was the site of a large plant to process the copper ore of the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company. Calumet and Hecla shut down the operation in 1968.
