Dream Island (Yume No Shima)
is a district in Kōtō, Tokyo, Japan, consisting of an artificial island built using waste landfill. It is not the first such island in the bay (see Umi-no-mori :ja:海の森公園). At current fill rates, there will be no more room for waste landfill in the bay without affecting shipping lanes by around 2050; likewise, Osaka Bay and Ise Bay are slowly being consumed by waste landfill islands, e.g. Rinku Town. History The island was originally conceived in the 1930s as a site for a new Tokyo Municipal Airport to replace Haneda Airport. The airport plan was finalized in 1938 and work on the island began in 1939, but fell behind schedule due to resource constraints during World War II. The airport plan was officially abandoned following the war, as the Allied occupation authorities favored expanding Haneda rather than building a new airport. Yumeshima
is an artificial island. It is part of Konohana-ku (此花区), one of the 24 wards of Osaka, Japan. It is near the mouth of the Yodo River. When all the landfill is completed the total area will be . It will be the site of Expo 2025, a World's Fair to be held in 2025. Overview It is located southwest of the island of Maishima, in the westernmost end of Osaka City. It is one of the 3 artificial island areas targeted by the “Technoport Osaka” plan formulated in 1988 with the aim of developing a new city center. There are two high-standard container terminals with a depth of 15 meters in the south of Yumeshima, but most of the area is unoccupied. Bikini Atoll
Bikini Atoll ( or ; Marshallese: , , meaning "coconut place"), sometimes known as Eschscholtz Atoll between the 1800s and 1946 is a coral reef in the Marshall Islands consisting of 23 islands surrounding a central lagoon. After the Second World War, the atoll's inhabitants were forcibly relocated in 1946, after which the islands and lagoon were the site of 23 nuclear tests by the United States until 1958. The atoll is at the northern end of the Ralik Chain, approximately northwest of the capital Majuro. Three families were resettled on Bikini island in 1970, totaling about 100 residents, but scientists found dangerously high levels of strontium-90 in well water in May 1977, and the residents were carrying abnormally high concentrations of caesium-137 in their bodies. Daigo Fukuryū Maru
was a Japanese tuna fishing boat with a crew of 23 men which was contaminated by nuclear fallout from the United States Castle Bravo thermonuclear weapon test at Bikini Atoll on March 1, 1954. The crew suffered acute radiation syndrome (ARS) for a number of weeks after the Bravo test in March. All recovered except for Kuboyama Aikichi, the boat's chief radioman, who died on September 23, 1954, from complications of radiation sickness. Kuboyama is considered the first victim of the Thermonuclear weapon, hydrogen bomb and of test shot Castle Bravo. Yumenoshima Stadium
is a 5,050-capacity multi-use stadium located in Kōtō, Tokyo on in Tokyo Bay. The stadium is mostly used for football but also has an athletics track. The seating capacity is 2,350 seats, and the grass stand holds 2,700 people. Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome
The , also sometimes called the Yumenoshima Tropical Plant Dome, is a botanical garden located at 3-2, Yumenoshima, Kōtō, Tokyo, Japan. It is operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association and open daily except Mondays; an admission fee is charged. The greenhouse was established in 1988 in Yumenoshima ("Dream Island") Park, a reclaimed landfill and dumping ground in Tokyo Bay. Its three domes, A, B, and C, currently contain about 1,000 species of tropical and semitropical plants.
