Draycott, Derbyshire
Draycott is a village in the Erewash district of Derbyshire, England. It lies around 6 miles east of Derby and 3 miles south-west of Long Eaton. Draycott is part of the civil parish of Draycott and Church Wilne. The population of this civil parish was 3,090 as taken at the 2011 Census. The meandering course of the River Derwent forms the southwestern boundary of the parish. The route of the former Derby Canal can still be traced across the parish. Trains on the Midland Main Line pass through the village but Draycott railway station is now closed. Elvaston Castle is nearby. History The name Draycott derives from resembling words ''dry coat'', as the village resides north of both the River Derwent and Church Wilne, a reservoir. In particularly rainy season the village used to flood, hence the name 'Dry Coat'. Nikki Louise Brammeier (née Harris; born 30 December 1986) is an English former professional racing cyclist from Draycott, Derbyshire. She began cycling at five and has won championships in various disciplines. Brammeier has competed in international events including the UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics and the Commonwealth Games. She won her first UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup in 2015 at Cyclo-cross Namur. In November 2017 Brammeier announced that she would be leaving the team at the end of the year in order to focus solely on cyclo-cross. The following month she and her husband Matt Brammeier announced the establishment of the MUDIIITA cyclo-cross project, intended to encourage participation in the sport in the UK, including a professional team known as MUDIIITA–Canyon. Maurice Broomfield
Maurice William Broomfield (2 February 1916 – 4 October 2010) was an English photographer whose images of post-war British industry were credited with capturing the optimistic spirit of the time. Life and work Born in Draycott, Derbyshire, England, Broomfield was the son of a lace designer. On leaving school at 15, he worked as a lathe operator on the assembly lines of the engineering company Rolls-Royce. In the evenings he studied at Derby College of Art. During the Second World War he was a conscientious objector, working in the Friends Ambulance Unit as an ambulance driver in the London Blitz, and after the war for Save the Children in Germany. Nicholas Williamson was an English lawyer and Catholic recusant in the 1590s. He was arrested in 1595 after planning a visit to the court of James VI of Scotland. Great Wilne is a small village in Derbyshire, England on the border with Leicestershire. It is south east of Derby. It is a village split from its church of St Chad's by the river. Henry Draycott
Henry Draycott (c. 1510–1572) was an English-born Crown official and judge in sixteenth-century Ireland, who held a number of senior Government offices, including Chancellor of the Exchequer of Ireland. Despite his apparent lack of legal qualifications, he also had a successful career as a judge, becoming a Baron of the Court of Exchequer (Ireland) and Master of the Rolls in Ireland. He also became a substantial landowner in the Pale, with his principal estate at Mornington, County Meath. His daughter Alice died in mysterious circumstances after a banquet in Dublin Castle in 1576, as did the Earl of Essex, the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland; they were both allegedly victims of poisoning, although it is more likely that they both died a natural death.
