Drax Group PLC is a power generation business. The principal downstream enterprises are based in the UK and include Drax Power Limited, which runs a biomass and coal fueled power station, Drax power station, near Selby in North Yorkshire. The Group also runs an international biomass supply chain business. The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. In 2021, the company was taken out of the S&P Global Clean Energy Index, as it no longer is considered to be a "clean" energy company by the S&P. Central Electricity Generating Board
The Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) was responsible for electricity generation, transmission and bulk sales in England and Wales from 1958 until privatisation of the electricity industry in the 1990s. It was established on 1 January 1958 to assume the functions of the Central Electricity Authority (1955–7), which had in turn replaced the British Electricity Authority (1948–55). The Electricity Council was also established in January 1958, as the coordinating and policy-making body for the British electricity supply industry. Blackburn Power Stations
Blackburn power stations are a series of electricity generating stations that have provided electric power to the town of Blackburn and the wider area from 1895 to the present. The first station in Jubilee Street, Blackburn began operating in 1895. A new larger station known as Blackburn East or Whitebirk power station was commissioned in 1921 and was rebuilt in stages over the period 1942 to 1955. Whitebirk station closed in 1976. Shoreham Power Station
Shoreham Power Station is a 420MWe combined cycle gas-fired power station in Southwick, West Sussex. It was built on the site of the Brighton B Power Station. History Gloucester Road Power Station Brighton was one of the first towns in the UK to have a continuous supply of electricity. In 1882 Robert Hammond established the Hammond Electric Light Company and on the 27 February 1882 he opened the Gloucester Road Power Station. It was set up in the yard of Reed's Iron Foundry, and consisted of a Brush dynamo, driven by a Robey engine. This was used to power sixteen arc lamps on a circuit around the town centre, operating from dusk until 11pm every day. Lanark Hydro Electric Scheme
The Lanark Hydro Electric Scheme refers to two hydroelectric plants in the Clydesdale area of South Lanarkshire, Scotland. They take in water from the Falls of Clyde. The two plants are known as Bonnington Power Station which takes in water from just above Bonnington Linn in New Lanark, and Stonebyres Power Station which takes water from above Stonebyres Linn near Kirkfieldbank. Of the two stations that make up the Lanark hydro electric scheme, Bonnington is the larger and both stations combined have an output of 16 MW. The Lanark Hydro Electric Scheme is the first of its kind in the United Kingdom to produce a clean renewable energy, using water from the falls Clyde to power homes and meet the demand for electricity after World War I. Galloway Hydro-electric Power Scheme
The Galloway hydro-electric power scheme is a network of dams and hydro-electric power stations in Galloway, south west Scotland. It was built between 1930 and 1936. The generating stations draw water from the River Ken, River Dee and River Doon through reservoirs at Loch Doon, Kendoon, Carsfad, Clatteringshaws, and Tongland. The unusual modernist stations were designed by Scottish civil engineer, Sir Alexander Gibb. The scheme, which is today operated by Drax, can produce a total peak power of around 106 megawatts. Damhead Creek Power Station
Damhead Creek power station is a 792 MWe gas-fired power station in Kent, England, on the Hoo Peninsula. It is near the site of the decommissioned Kingsnorth power station. History Entergy, an American power firm, commissioned the plant. It was built by Raytheon Engineers and Constructor and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, who provided the gas turbine equipment. The plant entered service in February 2001. The company trades as Damhead Creek Ltd. On 2 June 2004, the plant was bought by Scottish Power for £317 million. Rye House Power Station
Rye House Power Station is a 715 MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power station close to Rye House railway station in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. History The current station was built on the site of an earlier 128 MW coal-fired power station built in 1951, and an open cycle gas turbine plant commissioned in 1965 (see below). Both these stations were closed on 1 November 1982 and were subsequently demolished. The gas-fired station, near Hoddesdon, is about eighteen miles north of London, was built in the early 1990s and fully commissioned in November 1993 and officially opened in April 1994.
