Drag Count
A drag count is a dimensionless unit used by aerospace engineers. 1 drag count is equal to a C_d of 0.0001. Definition A drag count \Delta C_\mathrm d\, is defined as: :\Delta C_\mathrm d = 10^ \dfrac\, , where: :F_\mathrm d\, is the drag (physics), drag force, which is by definition the force component in the direction of the flow velocity, :\rho\, is the mass density of the fluid, :v\, is the speed of the object relative to the fluid, and :A\, is the reference area. The drag coefficient is used to compare the solutions of different geometries by means of a dimensionless number. A drag count is more user-friendly than the drag coefficient, as the latter is usually much less than 1. A drag count of 200 to 400 is typical for an airplane at cruise. Lift Force
A fluid flowing around an object exerts a force on it. Lift is the component of this force that is perpendicular to the oncoming flow direction. It contrasts with the drag force, which is the component of the force parallel to the flow direction. Lift conventionally acts in an upward direction in order to counter the force of gravity, but it can act in any direction at right angles to the flow. Vortex Induced Vibration
In fluid dynamics, vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) are motions induced on bodies interacting with an external fluid flow, produced by, or the motion producing, periodic irregularities on this flow. A classic example is the VIV of an underwater cylinder. How this happens can be seen by putting a cylinder into the water (a swimming-pool or even a bucket) and moving it through the water in a direction perpendicular to its axis. Since real fluids always present some viscosity, the flow around the cylinder will be slowed while in contact with its surface, forming a so-called boundary layer.
