Dr. Franklin E. Kameny Residence
The Dr. Franklin E. Kameny House in the Northwest Quadrant of Washington, D.C., is a two-story, brick Colonial Revival-style house built in 1955, with a screened porch and a one-car garage. It is significant for its association with gay rights activist Franklin E. Kameny (1925–2011), having served as his home and office, and as a headquarters for gay civil rights organizing. The Colonial Revival architectural style seeks to revive elements of American colonial architecture. The beginnings of the Colonial Revival style are often attributed to the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, which reawakened Americans to the architectural traditions of their colonial past. Mattachine Society
The Mattachine Society (), founded in 1950, was an early national gay rights organization in the United States, perhaps preceded only by Chicago's Society for Human Rights. Communist and labor activist Harry Hay formed the group with a collection of male friends in Los Angeles to protect and improve the rights of gay men. Branches formed in other cities, and by 1961 the Society had splintered into regional groups. At the beginning of gay rights protest, news on Cuban prison work camps for homosexuals inspired Mattachine Society to organize protests at the United Nations and the White House in 1965.
