Downtown South Bend
Downtown South Bend is the central business district of South Bend, Indiana. The boundaries downtown are generally considered to be the following: on the west bank of the St. Joseph River (Lake Michigan), St. Joseph River, north of Sample Street and east of Lafayette Boulevard. It features many local businesses as well as a hospital, hotels, museums, and office buildings. Revitalization In the 1970s, the area suffered from decreased economic activity and urban decay, but city-sponsored revitalization and reinvestment in the community has since improved downtown. Bike lanes and bus shelters have been introduced to allow for more attractive streets. Trees, small fountains, and monuments can be found here. Proposed New South Shore Line Station In South Bend
There are active proposals to build a new station in South Bend, Indiana, for the South Shore Line commuter rail service to replace the existing South Bend Airport station. The existing South Bend Airport station, built in 1992 on the east side of the airport, is a terminus for the train service. The route that carries the South Shore Line to its current station is considered slow and circuitous. While a number of locations have been looked at, the primary contenders have been relocating the station to the west side of South Bend International Airport or building a station in Downtown South Bend. Union Station (South Bend, Indiana)
Union Station Technology Center is a former union train station in South Bend, Indiana in the United States. History Opened in 1929 and situated across the tracks from the Studebaker auto plant, the building served the New York Central Railroad and Grand Trunk Western Railroad. It was designed by the architectural firm Fellheimer & Wagner. NYC's Detroit-Chicago "Great Steel Fleet" and GTW's Chicago-Canada trains used this station. When the New York Central merged with the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1968 to make the Penn Central Transportation Company, it used the station as well. The last trains departed in 1971 when newly created Amtrak moved its operations to the South Shore Line station on the city's western outskirts about west of Union Station constructed by the Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad a year earlier in 1970. I&M Building
The I & M Building, also known as Colfax Place, is a historic building located at 220 W. Colfax in South Bend, Indiana. It is located next to the Commercial Building. The building, which was built in 1929, originally housed the offices of the Indiana and Michigan Electric Company. The Art Deco building was designed by Austin & Shambleau. The seven-story building is faced in marble on its front first story, limestone on the remainder of its front, and brick on its sides. Terra cotta separates the building's front center windows through the fifth story, while stone with terra cotta features separate the side windows. The building is one of the few Art Deco structures in South Bend and the only "pure" example of the style within its downtown business district.
