Downtown Hayward, California
Downtown Hayward is the original and current central business district of Hayward, California, United States, and is home to the current Hayward City Hall, along with the two previous city halls, Alex Giualini Plaza and the City Center Building. The Hayward Fault runs through the area, and is the cause of the two previous city halls being taken out of use. The boundaries are Third Street to the east, Grand Street and Hayward BART to the west, Jackson Street and E Street to the south, and City Center Drive/Hazel Avenue to the north. Foothill Boulevard was known as "The Golden Strip", a retail business corridor that was built in the 1950s, and housed Capwell's and I. Magnin department stores. The street lost businesses after the opening of Southland Mall in 1964. Parks include Newman Park and The Julio Bras Portuguese Park. San Lorenzo Creek runs through downtown. Hayward Area Historical Society
Hayward Area Historical Society (HAHS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to documenting the history of the city of Hayward, California and adjacent communities. These areas include San Lorenzo, Ashland, Cherryland, Castro Valley, Fairview, the former communities of Russell City, Mount Eden, Schafer Park, and other parts of unincorporated Alameda County. The society was founded in 1956. Their museum in Downtown Hayward closed in 2012. Their new facility opened nearby in 2014. Activities HAHS operates the Meek Mansion and McConaghy House in partnership with the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, and the San Lorenzo Pioneer Cemetery with Alameda County. The society sponsors an annual History Awards, honoring local historians and preservationists. The 2012 awards were the 13th held. The ''Daily Review'' was a daily newspaper published in Hayward, California. Floyd L. Sparks was owner of the ''Review'' from 1944 to 1985, along with '' The Argus'' of Fremont and the ''Tri-Valley Herald''. It was last owned by Bay Area News Group-East Bay (BANG-EB), a subsidiary of MediaNews Group, which bought the paper in 1985. As of 2011, The executive editor was Kevin Keane. Proposed end of publication The newspaper was scheduled to stop publishing, with the last edition of the paper to be published on November 1, 2011. This was on the same day as the ''Oakland Tribune, Alameda Times-Star, Fremont Argus'' and ''West County Times'' were all scheduled to publish their last editions. Green Shutter Hotel
The Green Shutter Hotel is a historic hotel building located in downtown Hayward in Alameda County, California, United States. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004, and is on the California Register of Historical Resources. History The building was constructed in 1920 and was first used as a hotel after a large addition in 1926. It is currently used commercially, and houses the Green Shutter Hotel (a single room occupancy) on the second floor, with retail businesses on the ground floor, including The Bistro, a pub and music venue, and The Book Shop, now closed, an independent bookstore and at the time the only bookstore in Hayward. In 2017, the interior of the second floor of the building was largely gutted, shutting down the residential hotel. Some ground floor businesses are still operating. Mann Theatres was a movie theater chain that predominantly operated in the western United States, with a heavy concentration of theaters in Southern California. Its motto was "Where Hollywood goes to the movies". History The Mann Theatres chain was named after Ted Mann, the founder of the original Minnesota chain. Ted Mann married Rhonda Fleming in 1977.
